After a mysterious virus makes its way into the United States, the government demands that states seal themselves off from one another and do their best to protect their surviving residents. When the state of Florida is bordered off from the surrounding states, Taylen Fincher, a seventeen-year-old girl with a yearning for her former life finds herself wondering how much of what they’ve been told is true.

When Troum took control of the state, he told the residents that the other states had fallen to the virus and that he wouldn’t allow the same thing to happen to them. But Taylen doesn’t believe it. She insists that there is still life outside of the state, and she is going to do whatever it takes to prove it… but her actions will cost her more than she ever expected.

Troum kidnaps Taylen’s sister, Penelope, in hopes of coaxing her into behaving – into being a submissive resident, much like the others. But Taylen isn’t one to give in that easily.

Eager to rescue her sister, Taylen will set out on an adventure that’ll force her to open her heart to the unexpected and to uncover secrets that will change everything.

Hell hath no fury like a selkie separated from his true love.

The gate to the sea creature realm is finally open. Yara wants to bask in the glow of her budding relationship with Treygan and explore Medusa’s world, but as the new leader of Rathe her powers are needed to save a sea creature she’s never met.

Rownan assumes the worst is behind him when he returns home to be reunited with his wife, Vienna, only to discover she’s gone. She traveled to the evil realm of Harte to find another gateway to Earth and was never heard from again. Rownan claimed he would go through hell to be with her, and now he must prove it.

Rownan, Yara, and Treygan will put their lives and souls at risk by traveling to the most dangerous realm of all. Love is supposed to conquer all, but no one has ever conquered Harte.

How anyone has not read Tangled Tides is beyond me. Now with Dangerous Depths sitting finished beside me I am baffled why any one person would not be doing everything within their power to get their hands on it. Karen Hooper is a master at creating well developed characters, fascinating worlds and books that you just do not want to put down. There are people that take several books to develop a character and perfect it but Karen Hooper has it down with the first book and then just pushes her characters beyond in everything after. Reading Dangerous Depths was like revisiting a place that I had missed for far too long and yet you know it because the beauty of it all never changes. I am once again blown away by just how beautiful Karen Hooper's writing is. Dangerous Depths is every bit as amazing as Tangled Tides with a little more heart pulling moments added in for good measure. There was not a single moment that I was not hooked, flipping the pages to see how my favourite characters were going to pull off the impossible... again.

Where Tangled Tides gave you an idea of just how far everyone would go to protect the ones they love, Dangerous Depths shows you there is no measure of the distance they are willing to go. The story this time around took us to a not so beautiful land. The world was once again masterfully crafted and unique. Though there is magic, it is not beautiful and enchanting as it was before. No, this place makes you question absolutely everything that is going on and is what many would consider hell. In the quest to find Rowan’s love the trio will questioning everything that they see and do. I was often thrown from here to there or left screaming at a character that something wasn't real, to open their eyes. I would not say it was something that had terrifying creatures from my worst nightmare but for those that had to live it, I have no doubt that it was terrifying. The journey from start to finish with this one was more trying than Tangled Tides and possibly a little more emotional but it was every bit the book. There was no down time that had me board, in fact I may have stayed up late just to finish!

Yara and Treygan are still the amazing couple from the last book. There was no guessing that they were a couple or if they would finish the way they started. I would be a liar if I said that they were not tested in this novel because they were. The difference is that they were able to remain strong for each other and have a much better understanding of their relationship and who they are to each other. Yara is still the strong, self-determined and loving girl that she was before but she has much more power now. She is still learning about just how much she has and though Medusa’s sisters do not show her any respect she has no problem holding her ground. I would say that she did have growth but seeing she was already well developed and handles most things extremely well she didn't really need to, to be amazing. Yara remains to be one of my top book kick ass chicks and is loyal almost to a fault. With Treygan in this one he was every bit the Merman I remembered and then some. He is so freaking sweet and some of the small things he did continued to make me swoon.  I loved that there was just love between these two now and though they are together, they do not let it change who they are.

Rownan is really the game changer in this one.  I can not say that I disliked the guy but he was not my favourite person.  At the end of Tangled Tides I had a general understanding of his plotting and reasoning but you never really got the depth of it all.  It is obvious that Vienna and him have a love that rivals that of any you have heard before.  They take soul mates to an entirely new level and as much as I love Yara and Treygan and their relationship, it basically blows them away.  Yes, it is that strong of a bond and I began to feel a little more for this stubborn Selkie.  There is no sacrifice too small or too large when it comes to getting Vienna back.  For me Rownan because a character, not the bad guy in this one.  Though some of his decisions may have been rash and questionable, his intentions were always more than honourable.  Treygan may be my favourite but I would never deny that there is now a place in my heart for Rownan as well.

Someone that we also got a glimpse into was Nixie.  To be honest I had never really given her much consideration before now and I regret that.  Hooper has given this secondary much more depth than I had ever imagined possible.  She is more than Yara's Siren.  Nixie misses who she was, loves the happiness that being around her family brings and only wishes she were more useful when it comes to Yara.  Her need to be needed and the fact that she often did not feel as though she were a part of everything kind of tore at me.  What awaited her at the end basically ripped me apart.  I would love to go into her more but I honestly feel that unless you pick up this book you could never really grasp the depth and ache that has become a part of this character.

Sometimes second books suffer and do not quite become as great as the first or the ones that come after them but I would have to say Dangerous Depths is equal to its predecessor. With its easily flowing writing, stunning characters and addictive plot I will revisit this one just as persistently as the first. There were times that I found myself hoping that what was going on was an illusion and for the most part it was… Except for one horrifying time. However, that is neither here nor there and you will need to read this amazing book to figure it out yourself.  If you have not yet started the Monster Memoir Series you need to!!  Karen Hooper will easily capture your attention, imagination and heart with her stunning books.  This is one of the best Mermaid series out there and a must have for anyone that loves reading!!

Yara's transformation into a mixed breed left her equally balanced with dark and light, warm and cold.  I wondered, if the time ever came, which species she would defend first.  -Nixie

I had powers that Treygan didn't.  I could conjure up storms.  I had fierce selkie claws.  I could fly faster than he swa.  I didn't know much about dating or relationships, but I was pretty sure he was feeling emasculated. -Yara

For the first time ever, I saw Vienna.  With Rowan.  And if I had any traces of doubt about them before, they vanished the moment I witnessed them together.  I had a new understanding and appreciation for who, and what, we were saving. -Yara

Treygan smiled deviously.  "I like the sound of that."
"Get your mind out of the gutter."
"I assure you, any time I think about your body my mind is in heaven."
I threw a boot at him, but he dodged it then winked at me.

Truth be told, I wasn't confident at all.  We had burns on our skin, we were trapped in a cave for who knows how long, and demonic creatures had attacked us and ripped my wings off.  Our odds of surviving this trip weren't looking good.

“Have you ever been swimming here?” I asked moving my head to watch his reaction as I brought my feet up out of the water and folded them beside me.
“Yeah, most summers when I came here. We all used to use it as a way to cool off or just have some fun in between training.”
“How about skinny dipping?” I asked my grin growing due to the thoughts running through my head.
“Why? You want to try it?” he challenged.
“Only if you go first,” I laughed but stopped instantly when he removed his shirt and tossed it behind us. My eyes widened in surprise and I started to regret my words. “You’re not being serious are you?” I stuttered as he pulled off his shoes, throwing them over to where his shirt was crumpled.
“You can’t chicken out now Rea. It was your idea,” he said smiling as he removed each sock, teasing me as they ended up with the rest of his discarded garments.
I just stared at him, my lips moving but not making a sound as I tried to find an excuse.
He laughed at me. “Relax Rea, I’m just teasing you. Well unless you’ve changed your mind. In that case I’m being deadly serious.” He had a cheeky grin on his face as he spoke and I pushed him hard, toppling him into the water below.
There was a lot of splashing but Kai surfaced finally, taking a deep breath as he flicked the hair out of his eyes. I was clutching my stomach in fits of laughter as I bent over. The shock on his face was priceless.
“Oh you are so dead Rea, so, so dead,” he said, his voice ragged as the cold water and shock affected his half naked body. I just continued to laugh as he floated in front of me, his head bobbing up and down in a comical way.

Praise:

“I couldn't put it down. So I finished it last night and all I can say is WOW! This book was amazing and different.” Brianna (Book Blogger)

“I loved how the author took a different approach to writing a love story in modern times with the paranormal element present. I thought it was absolutely wonderful and refreshing. Marvelous!” Kathy H (Amazon Reviewer)

“In the end I had fallen in love with this story…completely untraditional it was a very original idea, not to mention modern. This story had such a good plot and the story structure was sound.” Kacii – The Kooky Bookworm (Book Blogger)

About the Author

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.
Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

Laura’s hair had started to grow out and was now shoulder length, and she kept it tied back in a high ponytail.
“Diana, I don’t know how to thank you and Jed for all you've done.
“It’s not much, but I think it’s kind of fun and cute, and Jed and I will be right next door if you need us.” Diana pressed her hand into the small of her back and rubbed her other hand with her gold wedding band over her almost eight months’ pregnant belly.
This place is better than I could have hoped for. I love that clean smell of new wood.” Laura took in the brand new loft, which had an antique double bed for her and a single bed for Gabriel, with lovely pink and green bedspreads. It was an open design, tastefully done, and even the appliances were brand new.
She set her purse on the round kitchen table with four chairs. At the west side of the loft was a cozy living room with a green taupe sofa and chair and a plasma TV mounted to the wall.
Footsteps clattered up the stairs. Laura gazed over the wooden rail, watching as Jed followed Gabriel and redheaded Danny, who was just walking and insisted on mastering the stairs all by himself and yelling at the top of his lungs,
“Mama, comin’ up!”
“You've got your hands full with Danny there. Does he ever stop, Diana?”
Laura smiled as she listened to the clomp and clatter of three boys: her five-year-old boy, Gabriel, who leaped up the steps; Danny, who crawled and patted each step; and Jed, who followed, encouraging his son.
“One more. Come on, you can do it.” Jed was grinning ear to ear, watching as Danny pushed himself to his feet and ran straight to his mommy.
“He’s a Friessen man; ‘slow’ and ‘easy’ aren't in their vocabulary,” Diana muttered just as Jed stepped closer and lifted Danny, tossing him in the air while he giggled and wiggled. Then Jed leaned down and kissed Diana.
“That’s not fair. I guarantee you I can take it slow and easy in some things you enjoy.” He winked, and Diana gasped before clearing her throat.
“Laura, listen, I am grateful you've taken this job.”
“Diana, Jed, I really do appreciate all thisand the job, even though I’m pretty sure you don’t really need me.”
“Oh, that’s where you’re wrong, Laura,” said Jed as he set a kid-size cowboy hat on Gabriel’s head.
“Cool hat. Ride horsey?” Gabriel beamed at Jed as he asked.
“Tell you what, bud. Let’s let your mama get settled, and you come help me feed the horses,” Jed answered. The sound of a vehicle pulling down the driveway had him stepping toward the window.
“The fact is, Laura, we’re the ones who are grateful,” Diana said. “Jed wants to be on a horse, riding, teaching the kids, not cooped up in an office, doing paperwork. And I have my hands full with Danny and this one here.” She rubbed the baby she carried in her large belly. “And I’m tired, too....”
“Well, I was wondering when he was going to show up,” Jed interrupted. Danny just then decided he wanted down, so Jed slung him over his shoulder to distract him.
“Who’s here, Jed?” Diana asked.
Laura felt a flutter of butterflies in her stomach when Jed glanced at Diana with a look that had her covering her mouth with her palm and turning away.
“My cousin, your husband,” Jed said as he started toward the stairs. Gabriel was at the window with Jed, and he raced toward the stairs and started down.
“Gabriel, come back here!” Laura said, but this time he did not listen, as he was out the door. She could hear him call out, “Andy, Andy.”
Laura went to the window and gazed out at Andy, dressed as he always was in dark jeans and a long-sleeved dark shirt, but he was not as neat as usual. He lifted Gabriel in his strong arms and hugged him.
“You know, Andy has a lot of faults, but caring for Gabriel is not one of them.” Diana was standing in the window, watching as her husband approached Andy. “I knew it was only a matter of time before he found out you were here. He was served this morning, too. He will be furious, Laura. It was cold and impersonal.”
“Diana, I don’t want to see him again, ever. I just want him gone and out of our lives for good.” Laura stepped back when Andy glanced up with those all-seeing hard blue eyes. At times, she’d swear they were etched in steel.
“Laura, how he treated you was horrible. We know that, and we all agree with you, but you can’t keep avoiding him. He’ll find out.”
Diana turned solemn blue eyes on her. She’d been a true friend who was always there for her, even with her husband recovering from surgery. It had been a miracle when he came through okay, and Diana had even told Laura that life was too short for regrets.
“How does he know? You and Jed promised me you wouldn't tell him,” Laura pleaded.
“Yes, we did, but don’t forget that Andy’s been having you followed,” Diana said. “I have to tell you, Laura, my husband doesn't agree with your decision. He’s honored it for now, hoping you’ll come to your senses. Andy does have a right to know where you are. You should know he’s offered to talk to Andy for you, too.”
Laura felt a surge of anger shoot like a rocket through her as she processed what Diana had said. Her face felt warm, and beads of sweat popped out over her brow. She squeezed her fists. “He’s been having me followed? Are you kidding me? What kind of sick
“Hello, Laura.”
She didn’t hear him come up, and what made it worse was that he was carrying Gabriel, who, by the looks of it, had no intention of allowing Andy to let him down. She could see how her son worshiped Andy, and that infuriated her. She was standing beside Diana, and it wasn't until Diana stepped back that Andy’s eyes widened and his brows furrowed with something dark and furious.
“What the hell?” he said.
Laura pursed her lips and struggled with those damn emotions, second guessing everything she’d done, and placed her hand over her own large, swollen belly just as the baby kicked.

2012 was an amazing year in the publishing world for me, and it started with The Forgotten Child, which landed on the Amazon bestseller list for western romance and romance series. 2013 has seen me posted in the top 100 authors on Amazon for romantic suspense, mystery/thrillers, and police procedures. Where did it all begin? In 2008, I published my first novel, The Captain’s Lady, a contemporary military romance, through The Wild Rose Press. I’ve since received the rights back from my publisher, and I rewrote the book and republished it with a brand new title, Saved. I write edgy romantic suspense (Walk the Right Road Series), western romance (Finding Love ~ The Outsider Series), and young adult mystery, and I warn my readers to expect the unexpected. I’m a mother of three children and we live on a small island in the Pacific Northwest. I encourage you to contact me by email; I do answer every email I receive. Stay tuned. There is more to come from the Walk the Right Road Series and Finding Love ~ The Outsider Series, as well as a brand new western romance series coming later this fall, The One. And to my readers and all of you who have shared my stories with your family and friends, a big, heartfelt thank-you.
