*REVIEW* The Phantom Diaries by Kailin Gow

  What happens to the Phantom after the tragedy at the Paris Opera House is the basis for this fantastic tale of The Phantom Diaries, loosely based on Gaston Leroux's classic, The Phantom of the Opera, but with a new tale and a modern twist. This new series for older teens and young adults is told through the eyes of 18 year-old Annette Binoche, who lands a job at the New York Metropolitan Opera House as a seamstress' assistant only to become the lead singer of the Opera House, with the help of the mysterious, yet highly-seductive Phantom.

  Don't start this expecting to read something that is exactly the same as The Phantom of the Opera.  Although it has it's similarities and uses a couple similar names it is its own story.  Kailin takes a classic that we love and turns it into something new and different that we can love.

  I think the reason this twist was so acceptable to me was the new characters.  I become much more critical when they are using the exact same people (even if they try different names).  


  I liked Annette.  I did find at times she had some of the more irritating qualities that drive me nuts but her mind and heart always seemed to go to the same place and person that I enjoyed reading about.  She has all of the passion and emotion I feel you truly need to make it on the stage.  Although it was obvious from the start that she was going to get the lead role with her raw talent she was still willing to push herself to get better (with the help of a hansom stranger of course).


  There is three guys to love in this novel. First you meet Chace who is a talented first chair violinist and then Eric the mysterious stranger  that want to help land her the leading role.  Lastly you meet Aaron Aragon, the arrogant yet charming owner of the opera house.  There is a lot of mind blowing kissing and some more suggestive scenes that may be a little beyond what some people want to hear.  I would say 17+ for these scenes but honestly I love them.  Nothing like a little extra steamy scene to get the heart rate up.


  The pace in this novel is fairly consistent and you never have time to get board. There is always one thing or another to be thinking about, or you push forth wanting to see if it is going to work out the way you hope it will.  Annette has a way of just falling into the place that she should be but as easy as that sounds you're never really sure where she should be.  Confusing right?  I think that this is part of why I was so drawn into it all, the hustle and bustle of the world that Annette lives in and all of the people that surround her.


I look forward to picking up book #2 which currently resides on my shelf.  Kailin Gow never fails to captivate me with her writing and always seems to leave me wanting a little more.

*REVIEW* The Girl with Borrowed Wings by Rinsai Rossetti

    Frenenqer is not an ordinary girl and at times she seemed to give up too easy for me but then you have to look at how she was raised.  Even emotion is banned in her house, it's the speak when spoken to world and even then you better make sure you say the right thing.  She feels as though she should have been born with wings, that she was not meant to be stuck in the hole that is the oasis.  She struggles with her "missing" wings and the constant feel of her fathers finger on her spine pushing her to do the right thing.  Upon making her first act of defiance her world is thrown off it's path and she really begins to become a person not just a shell of one.

This is a story of many firsts and will not be for everyone,  I personally adored it.  It's about a girl that wishes to fly, wishes to be free and despite all appearances wishes to be cared about.  One action that started to change and shape her life and could start her life if she chooses.  This is Frenenqer telling her story her way.  Her voice tends to be a little flat and if it weren't for the fact I could feel her struggle I may have stopped reading.  There in the struggle lies the girl that I wanted to see and knew was hidden.  Upon meeting a free person she starts to let herself go a little but like her wings that aren't there, her fathers finger keeps pushing her to do the right thing. I think that this was my biggest problem was that she shut herself down because of how she was "supposed" to be.  I just kept holding off for who I hoped she would become.

  Sangris (aka free person) is not only a conflict for Frenenqer but himself.  Nenner (his nickname for Frenenqer) changes his entire world.  This is actually why I think I loved this book so much.  Even though it's Frenenquer's story, the lesser story of Sangris really attracted me.  Being free sounds great right but it isn't all it seems.  No you aren't bound by many rules but you also aren't bound by family and for the most part friends.  I found that the more I read and seen Sangris the more I felt for him and the more I myself fell for him.  He ends up with far more of an attachment and more feelings than his "Nenner" wants.  His freedom was lonely and now he needs more.

  When all of the non-emotion and emotion came to a head I realized why I loved this book so much.  Rinsai  Rossetti created a book that was emotion and lesson packed like a contemporary (which I am quickly becoming addicted to) and gave it a very slight paranormal twist.  The attachment that grew between Sangris and Frenenqer was something well developed and I couldn't help but hold me breath when one of them was willing to put everything on the line to show that.  This is the number one reason to read this book, to find out how everything breaks and everything can start.

Why I am waiting on this one:

1.  Done from a male POV <3.  Love picking up a good book written in the guys eye (yes I know I have no  way of knowing if it's good or not but I have high hopes).

2.  I think the cover is cool and kind of haunting.  I think what draws me the most is the ribbons of darkness that seem to be attached to him.  Maybe that isn't what they are meant to be but they draw me to the cover.

3.   Just all around curious as to what happens.
