Review

Holy talent Batman.  Ada Adams has done it yet again!  ReAwakened was every bit the awesome action packed page turner that ReVamped was.  Actually if possible I liked this one a little more... Not really sure if that is
possible though.  This is one series that I'm not quite sure why it's not on shelves of every bookstore out there.  It's the type of book you pick up and don't put down until you have turned the very last page.

The story in this one is just a quick paced and fun to read as the first.  You are taken back to Angel Creek with Dawn and her awesome group of misfits but things are changing.  The group is supposed to become the towns protectors but things just go horribly wrong.  The team seems to be put in an impossible situation in which they are made out to be less than they really are.  Fear not though  Dawn is determined to keep spirits up and get to the bottom of everything.  Everything being all of the Borns that are being abducted and never returning.  Scary considering Dawn is one but as always she is willing to do whatever it takes to protect those around her, even if it does mean putting herself in danger.

Dawn is such an awesome character.  I have a serious girl crush on her.  She is all around kick ass but when it comes down to it she is still just a girl.  I was going to say human but she is far from human.  I really enjoyed the growth in her throughout this book.  Actually truth be told Dawn is one character that I can say with certainty is always growing.  I love that I don't have you scream and pull my hair out because she is constantly making the same mistakes.  Not saying that she is perfect because she is far from perfect but she learns from her mistakes and tries not to make the same one twice.  Though sometimes her heart takes over her head, I think that I love her more for it.  You know sometimes when a character is just too perfect you're like "Um...  Where can I relate?"  Dawn doesn't have that feel.  Though her flaws are not abundant she has them and they are what make her so easy to love and relate to.

Now normally I would go into the relationship part of the book here. However there are far too many awesome characters that I feel would be left out by me doing this.  Like Hunter.  If you read book one (ReVamped) I know you are thing WTF?!  But Hunter is all different now and actually in his first appearance in this book my jaw may have dropped just a little.  He is so much more than he was in book one and we get a look at his past.  It's not all rainbows and butterflies and you kind of get why he was the way he was.  Though he is no longer that person either.  There is also so much growth in Brooke, Sophie and  Seth.  My gosh I love the banter that goes on between Sophie and Seth.  The make the cutest non-couple, couple.  And Sophie is becoming more than he stand back librarian self.  She is becoming someone that can stand up for herself but she also really stands up for her team and does what is necessary to help them.  Overall the entire band of misfits has become oh so much more.  I am seriously routing for Hunter though!

Now the romance...  I am at a loss for words really, this is not easy to explain at all.  In the start of the book I wanted to punch Sebastian.  Oh ya, I wanted to haul off and tell him how unbelievably stupid he was.  With the undeniable attraction between him and Dawn, I just couldn't understand his actions. I don't think Dawn understood either but even through her hurt her affection never changed.  Even when Razor (the hot new guy) steps on the scene.  Truth be told Razor never even had a chance because of how Dawn feels for Sebastian but he does make for some awesome verbal wars.  If you fear the dreaded love triangle than you can pick up ReAwakened worry free.  Despite the addition the romance remains between Dawn and Sebastian.

Truth be told I am unsure if I love this book or ReVamped better.  The are both chalk full of awesome and are undeniably a must read!   Even if you aren't a huge fan of Vamps you may want to give this one a try.  With such witty and fun dialogue it's hard not to love.  Then you can actually top that with the fact it is masterfully written and a fun read.  Ada Adams is brilliant and I can't wait to see what happens next!! Literally, the ending KILLED ME a little on the inside.

Exiled & Shift by M.R. Merrick: Promo, Excerpt & GIVEAWAY!!

Power Will Flourish

Lives Will be Lost

Nothing, Will be Forgotten

Chase Williams is a demon hunter in the Circle, or at least he was supposed to be. On his fifteenth birthday, Chase stepped up to the altar to claim his elemental power, but it never came. Elemental magic is passed down to a hunter through the bloodline, but on Chase's birthday, the bloodline stopped.
Exiled without the Circle's protection, Chase has spent two years trying to survive a world riddled with half-demons and magic. When he has a run in with a frightened and seemingly innocent demon, he learns the Circle's agenda has changed: the Circle plans to unlock a portal and unleash pure-blood demons into the world.  Vowing to stop them, and knowing he can't do it alone, Chase forms a reluctant alliance with Rayna - a sexy witch with an attitude and a secret. In their attempt to stop them however, Chase and Rayna find themselves in the middle of the Circle's plan, leaving one of them to decide what their friendship is worth, and the other's life depending on it.

I’d had several jobs in the past year. This one I’d managed to keep for a few months. Most of my employers frowned on me coming to work with cuts andbruises all the time. It made for “poor presentation,” they’d say. I was thankful it hadn’t interfered with this job, yet.
I finished up my shift and had started my walk home from the burger joint when I felt it. A hunter doesn’t mistake the feeling that demons are around. It moves down your spine and chills your bones. Feeling it proved I was indeed a hunter, even without an element.
The August air was warm for the late hour, and a thick layer of sweat made my white shirt cling to me. I stopped and unzipped my duffle bag, locating the silver dagger inside. Silver was great no matter what you were fighting; it could do serious damage to anything of the Underworld. The tingle shot down my spine again. If I focused, I could feel each hair on my neck rise. I saw a blur of movement across the street and watched it disappear into a shadowy alley. I moved across the street in a low crouch, resting my weight on the balls of my feet. I slowed my breathing and pulled the dagger from my bag before I slipped around the corner.  My senses were alive and strained to see movement, or hear the sound of feet
shuffling against loose rocks. As a hunter, I could see well in the dark, though the only light came from a single flickering street lamp.
I was almost to the end of the alley when it hit. I couldn’t tell what “it” was, but it struck my back and launched me forward. My feet tumbled over my head and my back smashed hard into the concrete wall at the end of the alley. Hands grabbed me and lifted me to my feet, dragging me a few steps before throwing me
back the other way. I flew through the air, hit the ground and rolled out into the street. I used my momentum and came up on one knee to recover. My back burned where pavement had grated the skin off, but I pushed the pain aside as the figure stalked towards me.
“Your death will bring me great glory, hunter. Killing the son of Riley Williams will make me a legend among the Underworld,” the low voice gloated. “That’s really great, good luck with that,” I said.
He smiled and the fangs that slid down from his gums were long and sharp. His pale skin started to thin as the vampire changed into his demon form.  Milky skin faded into transparent flesh, revealing the moving muscles beneath. Veins ran black through the vampire’s face and limbs, pushing against the thinning clear skin. Strange muscles in his hands pushed bony talons out over his finger nails, and the whites of his eyes disappeared, filling with an inky blackness.  The dark orbs stared at me as his fanged mouth curled into a smile, and in a blur he sprang forward, talons swinging.
I ducked as they sliced through the air over my head. I brought the knife up into his stomach and twisted the blade before I pulled it out. Blood spilled onto the ground, but I knew the wound wasn’t enough to kill him. Cut off his head or pierce his black heart – those were my options. I could light him on fire, but I was fresh out of matches.
I brought my foot up and kicked the vampire back to give myself some room.  I steadied myself, waiting for him to charge, but his body jerked and the point of a silver blade appeared in his chest before he could move. The vamp’s body went limp and collapsed, then exploded in a flash of orange light. It burned away into a cloud of ash and littered the pavement, revealing the girl – of all things – who had beaten me to the kill. Raven hair spilled over her pale shoulders with hints of red highlighting the
occasional strand. A tight leather top revealed a sliver of toned stomach and a tease of cleavage. Black pants hugged her hips and long slender legs and met knee-high boots. Her skin glistened in the light, but the most noticeable of her features were her eyes.
Bright green orbs sparkled with an odd glow: demon’s eyes. They had the slit pupils of a cat that I’d never seen on anything other than a house pet or a shifter in animal form. I slipped back into fight mode. I’d never watched one demon kill another, but I suppose for the fame of killing me, why not?
I lunged and threw a punch at her face, but she dodged it with ease.
“You almost messed up my kill,” she snarled, and I had barely enough time to dodge her powerful kick.
“Your kill? You stole it from me!” I swung my fist and hit her stomach. She bent over, winded, before she stepped back and caught her breath, regaining her stance and composure.
“Stole it? Please, I’d been tracking him for blocks.” She spun and caught my chin with the heel of her boot, snapping my head to the side. I rubbed my jaw where she’d hit me and smiled.
“Well then, I guess it’s a good thing I was here to slow him down. Who knows if you would have been able to catch him?”
She moved in for another kick but I was ready. I grabbed her foot and pushed her back. She fell to the ground but quickly came to her feet. “I would have gotten him just fine on my own. Hunting is an art. It would’ve gone on as long as I deemed necessary.”
“Call it hunting if you want, but a filthy demon killing her own kind is still just that: a filthy demon.” I could tell I’d offended her even before she hit me. My eyes watered when her fist smashed into my nose and her foot connected with my stomach in quick succession. I jerked back to avoid the knee that flew towards my face and pushed it to the side, but she was already moving towards me. Her hands hit my chest hard and I soared through the air for a long moment before I hit the ground. I felt a sharp pain shoot up through my spine and I could hear her laughter as I struggled to my feet.
“I have to admit I expected more from you, Chase, being the infamous son of Riley Williams and all.”
I gripped my dagger until my knuckles turned white and spoke through gritted teeth. “I’ll try not to disappoint.”
My fist hit her jawbone and made a loud crack. I came back with my other hand and wrapped it around her throat. I stepped into the movement and threw her forward in a burst of hunter’s strength. She slammed into the ground but recovered faster than I anticipated. Before I could brace myself she was on top of me.
I pulled her body down and we rolled over each other against the cold concrete until I was on top. I kept a handful of her hair wound tight in my fist and pushed my blade against her throat. “More what you expected?” “Not really.” She smirked.
I felt the point of a knife pushing against my stomach. Before I could react, a commanding male voice came from behind us.
“Enough!” it boomed.  I didn’t take the knife or my eyes off the demon beneath me.
“But we were just starting to have fun,” she complained. The smile on her face was anything but threatening. If this was her idea of fun, I didn’t want to know what she considered boring.
“Rayna, enough,” the man repeated.
She sighed, sticking out her bottom lip in a pout before the knife left my skin. “Truce?” she said with an innocent face.
“Not a chance,” I replied, pushing the knife harder against her throat.  I was pulled away from Rayna and pressed against a wall, thick hands around my throat. I raised my blade but my opponent blocked and twisted my arm at an awkward angle. The man ripped the blade from my hand and I squirmed.
“Calm down, Chase. We are not here to hurt you,” the voice said. A complete shadow hung around the figure, moving as he moved.
“So she attacked me for fun?” I snapped.
“If we wanted you dead, you would be,” he said, releasing his grip, and I fell to the sidewalk. He stepped back slowly and the shadow peeled itself from his body. As it faded, it revealed a large man whose magic I’d never sensed before.
“If you don’t want to kill me, what do you want?” I asked.
The man reached forward, a large dark arm holding out my dagger. I wrapped my hand around it in confusion. The contrast of our skin was drastic; my pale flesh glowed against his midnight color and the size of his hand alone made me feel small. “What Rayna told you was true. We were tracking the vampire, not you.  Although I’m happy to finally meet you, I’d imagined this moment under different circumstances,” he said.
“There are ways to meet people besides attacking them.”
“I agree. You must forgive us; Rayna is quick to lash out when insulted.” My eyes met his and I couldn’t read his expression. I knew I hadn’t been polite, but I wasn’t about to apologize to a demon. “You know, your father would not have hesitated to kill her, no matter his position.”
“Congratulations, you’ve discovered I’m not my father. What the hell would you know about him anyways?”
He turned his head to the side and as the light hit his neck it revealed a tattoo.  It was the one every hunter received after their ceremony. The one I never got.  The tattoo made me realize why he could bend the shadows; he was an air elemental and a powerful one at that. I had heard stories of hunters being able to work with shadows, but I’d never seen it done firsthand.  I looked him over, not sure what to think of a hunter working with a demon. He was taller than me by an inch, around six-foot three. His head was smooth
shaven, though there was a small patch of hair under his lower lip. His skin seemed like a smooth dark chocolate. His body was large and square, broad shoulders making him a massive column of strength and power. He filled out a sharp black suit jacket and wore black loafers, leaving the only color on him a flash of bright
blue dress shirt.
“You’re a hunter.”
“Once upon a time, yes I was.”
He broke eye contact and cleared his throat, extending his massive hand towards me. “Look at my manners. Let me introduce myself. I am Marcus Starkraven.”
My eyebrows shot up; I knew that name! “You’re supposed to be dead.”
“Is that what you heard?”
“You used to hunt with my father.”
He nodded slightly, but otherwise ignored the comment. “You already met
Rayna,” he said, taking his unshaken hand back. I looked at Rayna and got caught in the depths of her green, slit eyes.
“What are you doing with a demon?” I said, spitting out the last word like a curse.
“How’s your nose?” Rayna asked.
I touched it and looked at the blood on my fingers. “Lucky shot.”
She chuckled and stepped towards me. “Care to go again?” Marcus put an arm in front of her.
“Not what we’re doing right now,” he said.
“You didn’t answer my question.”
“She is my student. And my friend.”
I couldn’t respond. I didn’t believe it. A hunter being friends with a demon was unfathomable.
“I would have thought, being out in the real world, you’d have come to understand, Chase. Some Underworlders don’t fit the Circle’s black and white image of good and evil,” he said.
“The only Underworlders I’ve come across have tried to kill me.”
“Your name is feared by many in the Underworld. Your father has created quite the reputation for himself, so they fear you as well,” Marcus said.
I smirked. “As they should.”
He shook his head. “That wasn’t a compliment.

Twenty-year-old Camryn Bennett had always been one to think out-of-the-box, who knew she wanted something more in life than following the same repetitive patterns and growing old with the same repetitive life story. And she thought that her life was going in the right direction until everything fell apart.
Determined not to dwell on the negative and push forward, Camryn is set to move in with her best friend and plans to start a new job. But after an unexpected night at the hottest club in downtown North Carolina, she makes the ultimate decision to leave the only life she’s ever known, far behind.
With a purse, a cell phone and a small bag with a few necessities, Camryn, with absolutely no direction or purpose boards a Greyhound bus alone and sets out to find herself. What she finds is a guy named Andrew Parrish, someone not so very different from her and who harbors his own dark secrets. But Camryn swore never to let down her walls again. And she vowed never to fall in love.
But with Andrew, Camryn finds herself doing a lot of things she never thought she’d do. He shows her what it’s really like to live out-of-the-box and to give in to her deepest, darkest desires. THE EDGE OF NEVER
 Camryn and Andrew Shopping
___________________________________________________________

We head over to the medicines and there’s a middle-aged couple standing in front of the cough syrup, reading the labels.

Andrew says casually, without lowering his voice, “Babe, did you find that yeast infection stuff?”

My eyes spring open and I freeze in front of the Tylenol.

He removes a small box of Advil from the shelf.

The couple pretends not to have heard what he said, but I know they heard him.

“I mean are you even sure that’s what’s causing the itch?” he goes on and I’m literally melting from the heat in my face.

The couple does glance over this time, covertly.

Andrew is grinning his ass off at me from the side, pretending to be reading labels.

I want to smack him, but instead, I play him at his own game.

“Yeah, baby I found it,” I say as casually as he had, “what about you? Did you see if they have extra-small sized condoms?”

The woman turns her head and looks right at him, up and down, and then she eyes me before going back to reading labels.

Andrew doesn’t break; somehow I knew he wouldn’t. He just smiles over at me,
enjoying every second of this.

“One size fits all, baby,” he says, “I told you they fill out better when you can actually make it hard.”

A spitting noise bursts from between my lips followed by laughter.

The couple leaves the aisle.

Author Bio

Author of THE DARKWOODS TRILOGY and DIRTY EDEN, mother, werewolf & zombie
fanatic, book addict and a happy hermit obsessed with the Universe. Oh, and AMC’s “The
Walking Dead”.

Addictions: Starbucks every morning, trolling Barnes & Noble’s shelves once a week, detesting
winter, shopping flea markets and preparing for the collapse of society as we know it. Do I own a

tin foil hat? Maybe. :-)

I was born in Arkansas and have lived here most of my life, except the couple of times when

I lived in Pennsylvania. I started my first novel at the age of thirteen and have been writing
something ever since. Generally, I love characters in life and on paper. I pay attention to people,

especially those whose personalities make them different from the rest of us: the drug addict
roaming the Laundromat that talks to himself, the young, inattentive mother in the park with the
meanest kid on the playground – (the entire cast of ‘Swamp People’) – characters fascinate me
and I hope that it shows in my literary work.

Some authors that inspire me are Neil Gaiman, Anne Rice, Cormac McCarthy, Max Brooks,
J.K. Rowling, Richard Matheson, William R. Forstchen, Carrie Ryan, David Moody, Phillipa
Gregory and Lisa Smedman.

I’m always on the lookout for the next great book to pull me into its
world and piss me off when I read the last page and know that it’s over.
I’m a sucker for anything Christopher Lee, Ralph Fiennes, Edward Norton and Cate Blanchett.
But my biggest fan-girl superstars are Alex Filippenko, Michio Kaku, Brian Cox, Michelle
Thaller and Neil Degrasse Tyson!

Also, almost more than anything I love nature and this beautiful planet that I live on. I just wish
everyone else did too….

Shelf Envy with Joy!!

Hi!! I can not even tell you how freaking excited I am to be doing this meme!! Like happy dance, fan girl squee's and with pictures of shelves I may only ever dream about...  Well lets just say ecstatic does not cover it!!  I would
be lying if I said I didn't also mention to Joy SEVERAL times how much I would LOVE to do her blog meme with her!!

What books do you tend to buy more than others?
I’ve been a YA addict for at least four years now so my collection is pretty much dominated by those. Lately, I’ve been buying “age-appropriate” books just because I’ve started to get tired of reading the same old stuff. Also, since the inception of a new Adult blog (J & J Read Smut), I’ve started to accumulate Erotica books...in my Kindle and some paperback copies.

Is there anything in particular that makes you go for a book? Or is it all just what the moment dictates to you?

I have a list. I kid you not. I have a spreadsheet. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter whether the book is a suckfest. My obsession with buying books does not discriminate. I buy them all. Sigh.

Shelf organization: Have it? Want it? Need it? and if you could do anything with your shelves for organization what would you do?
None. It’s the basic, READ, TO BE READ, WILL NOT TOUCH WITH A TEN FOOT POLE SHELF. I do want a system – preferably, by author’s name. But Tiff, I live in a houseful of books. I have a total of three libraries. Yes, libraries. I’m not talking shelves, I’m talking rows of shelves. I have no time to organize my books, simply because I’ll never be able to read them all if I let my OC tendencies rule my life – compound that with my ADD, ADHD, or whatever short term interest disorders are there, then there’s no freaking way I’ll be able to do much reading. The end result is an organization system that doesn’t make any sense. It’s all random – organized chaos.
(I would just like to put it out there that I did offer my organization
services and still do!  Even more so after seeing your shelves *sigh*)

Most recent favourite purchase? Favourite purchase ever?
Pfft. You know Melina Marchetta is my literary goddess. Any books of hers is a favourite purchase. But the best one I’ve ever bought is her Finnikin of the Rock. It’s the non-fantasy FANTASY, epic romance, epic story of the human condition. I’ve read that book at least half a dozen times and every time I pick it up, I cry harder where I’m supposed to cry, I laugh harder where I’m supposed to laugh. She writes from her soul and her characters show it. Seriously, woman.
I WILL DE-FRIEND YOU IF YOU DON’T READ ANY OF HER BOOKS SOON. I’m glaring at you right now.
(*Note* Will pick up as soon as evil month known as "December" stops
killing me)

Describe in 10 words or less what looking at your shelves makes you feel. Damn. I read a lot of books.

Do you have a spot that you horde your favourites?
Yes. Living room bookshelves houses most of my read books. I have Melina, Cassandra, JR Ward, the writing duo of M Stohl and K Garcia all together in one shelf. Can you believe that my classics collection is in my musty basement? I mean, I betcha Jane Austen and the Bronte clan are plotting my demise. I realize that it’s a sacrilege, but I don’t want to display those books upstairs where people can see them. They’d think I’m showing off or something...Lol!

Do you remember when your book hoarding started? Do you ever worry
about your shelves?
So Stephenie Meyer introduced me to YA with her Twilight books (2008). After that, I couldn’t get enough. And then I found Hunger Games – at that time, Mockingjay was still a work in progress. I didn’t know what to do for the time being. I went to the bookstore and found The Mortal Instruments. I haven’t looked back since. Every Tuesday, they see me at Chapters by my work. Every Sunday, they see me at Indigo across town from where I live. Do I ever worry about my shelves? Not really. I worry about the floor joists in my bedroom. I’ve managed to move some of the books out but I just know it won’t be long until they’re full again.
