“I’m calling 911,” Teal said frazzled by the whole thing.
I held on to his wrist tighter, “Hold on not yet.”
“What do you mean not yet, are you crazy!” Teal screamed at me frantic.

“Kasey, what is going on?”
“I don’t know,” I yelled back.
“Where’s is Dion and Nolan? How could they have just disappeared?” He started to follow me to my car.
“Dion took Nolan back to his house.” I knew I had a lot of explaining to do.
“Exactly how,” he stopped walking.
 “I will explain in the car, now let’s get the hell out of here.”
He gathered the seriousness in my tone and hurried to catch up. As soon as we made it to the car my phone vibrated. It was Dion letting me know that he arrived at the house and Nolan was with Max. Feeling relieved but completely terrified I sobbed.
 “Who was that?” Teal asked. His eyes wide, his face covered with an expression of madness. I started the car with shaky hands and began our forty-five minute trip to the Kleon ranch. I kept my breathing shallow and slow. The smell of blood from our clothes made me sick.
“It was Dion, he’s at the house. Max is taking care of Nolan.”
 “Kasey,” Teal narrowed his eyes, “how did Dion get to Saint Cloud in a few minutes?”
I exhaled and shot quick glances at Teal. “Dion isn’t exactly human.”
He lost all color in his face and his eyes went from narrow to wide.
 “What do you mean he’s not human?”
 “Dion and his brothers are immortals…”
 “Jesus, Kasey. I’m going to flip out on you if you freakin tell me your boyfriend is a vampire!” He was crazed.
 “Don’t be ridiculous Teal, vampires don’t exist…I don’t think. Dion and his brothers are immortal saints.”

  Ruby Red is a prime example of a book that sat on my book shelf simply for too long.  Honestly I bought it because of its pretty red cover (I seem to have a thing for covers with red in them) and the fact that it was a bargain book on Chapters shelves.  Sadly it was something I had to have but didn't have the time for so it sat there, not unloved but unread.  When I made the decision to pick it up because I had all three books on my shelves and knew that I should really start the series that I had to have and yet neglected, I had no idea I was picking up a read that would only take me a day to read.  I was swept away by Gier's writing and the fantastic story.

  I believe that this book was so easy to fall into and stick to because there was constant movement and progress.  Though this did make the book a tad bit predictable in the start, that changed just before the half way mark and I found it much more fun not to know what was happening.  Upon finding out that Gwen was not groomed to be a traveler, but her cousin Charlotte's I found myself realizing it was obvious that it was to be Gwen.  It wasn't until later when Gwen proved that she could travel (unplanned) and a few of the secrets that have been hidden from anyone that is not part of the inner circle that I realized I did not have a clue what was coming next.  I also realized that I am just as confused as Gwen is, in who I should trust.  

  When it comes to Gwen I didn't love her but I did like her.  She was exactly a sixteen (and a half) year old girl that behaved as such.  Well, I guess that is if you don't include the fact that she can see ghosts and talk to them.  Nothing to do with her time travel ability I am sure you are thinking but I think that it has everything to do with it.  Gwen is used to not being the star of the family and honestly she was okay with that, the thought of time travel scared the crap out of her.  However, when it happens she handles it mostly well and I will admit with far more calm than I would have met the situation with.  I think in the end it was her curiosity that kept her going and doing things that her mother warned her against.  Gwen has a lot of potential to become a great character and I hope that her judgment and ability to hold her own keeps up and doesn't fall back onto Gideon.

  This is not a horribly romantic book.  Normally when a book is some form of historical fiction, it is basically a given that there will be romance.  With Ruby Red I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't.  Romance doesn't make a book the writing and the story does but I was looking forward to a little romance.  Not that I was expecting Gideon to fall instantly in love with Gwen but I did not expect the resistance and boarder line resentment towards her.  There was a definite attraction from Gwen's side though, but she was also not desperate enough to throw herself at him.  Admittedly I do hope for something to develop between the two over the next couple of books.

  Kerstin Gier has created something that is quick to read and wonderfully creative.  There is so much more to this book than my words can explain.  It may not be complex but it is a fun and quick read that I believe almost anyone could enjoy.  Not to mention the zero love triangle... Did I forget to mention that.  Well there is only ever one guy!  Not even a best friend fighting for the attention over the new love interest.  Pick this book up if you are looking for something that is lighter and has some time travel/historical fiction in it!!


  I found myself back on the doormat outside our house again, jumped up, and looked around.  Everything seemed the same as when I'd left just a little while ago to go and buy Great-aunt Maddy's sherbet lemons.  The buildings, the parked cars, even the rain.
  The man in black at the entrance of number 18 was staring across the road at me.
  "And you're not the only one to be surprised," I muttered
  I reached for the plate, although it was sudden;y going all blurred before my eyes and I felt as if someone was going to pull the sofa away from under me.
  "What will happen when the Circle of Blood closes?"  Good heavens.  I heard myself talking just like one of them.  Circle of Blood.  Next thing I knew, I'd start speaking in verse.

  Fates was a wonderfully written and carried a tragic note to it right from the start.

  This read did not feel like the 336 pages that it is. I finished this read in well under 24 hours and surprised that a book of such length could feel half of the size. When it comes to reading about the fates, there is a certain expectation from me and Fates was nothing like that but in the best way possible. I found that Lanie Bross had done something wonderful and unexpected, taking me by surprise.

  The biggest surprise that I found with Fates was that there was not the traditional three fates (Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos), but an unmentioned number. This is kind of what threw me the most because when you think of the fates you think of the three. However, this also gave a little bit of an edge to the book for me. These fates were different and Corinthe was different. The only thing that I wished was different was the fact that you never meet any of the other fates, you never really get to experience any of them in their world. This is not saying that I did not enjoy what we got to experience of the other worlds we see, but I believe that a little more depth/insight would have been wonderful.

  I felt for Corinthe. She was thrown out of everything she had known and love because she behaved... well human. She allowed curiosity to take hold of her and questions are unacceptable. Seriously, who would want to live that way and never be able to question anything. Though I may understand there are things that she should not have questioned, I believe if there is room for error, there is room for questions and nothing is perfect. There were times that her desire and will to do anything to get home irritated me but at the same time I could understand the need. Lanie Bross conveyed perfectly just how much Pyralis meant to Corinthe and why she wanted to go back and was willing to do what she was told to get there.

  When it comes to romance I really loved what Luc and Corinthe had. Which was exactly nothing but something at the same time. For both of them the other is just a means to an end and yet they are more to each other. It was Luc that often had thoughts of Corinthe despite the fact that she had tried to kill him many times. He really had a good heart and knows what love really is. Did he love Corinthe? You know I don't believe that they got to that part of the romance. I mentioned that they were a nothing and something couple, but their feelings did develop and they learned from each other. Most importantly Corinthe learned from Luc.

  Fates may not have been the read I expected, but I respected it for its new take and original story.  I did not realize this was supposed to be a series, and am beyond excited to get to the next book.  There is something about this book that seems to say that there is much promise for this series and its author.  Lanie Bross did a phenomenal

Hidden behind tall trees, I came to a small natural clearing of low grass. In this patch, the twins battled with swords. I could tell they had been at this for a while. Sweat soaked their shaggy hair. Droplets poured down their bare muscular chests. It was hard to distinguish who was who. One wore black shorts and the other blue. They grunted with every swing, and I could see all their teenage boy muscles flex when their swords struck.

“Clink, clank,” the swords sounded with each smack. Their footwork was impressive as they anticipated the other’s move. They were in a dangerous synchronized dance. I recognized the swords from research for an extensive history report. The assignment was on the Roman Coliseum and the Gladiators. The men used these swords during the mid-first century. I couldn’t believe the twins were fighting with this type of sword.

The swords were about two feet long with a diamond cut, pointed tip. They swung them around with ease and precision as if they were mere batons. Is this what these boys did for fun? One twin thrust his sword straight down toward the other, but he masterfully blocked the strike. I found it odd they fought with no shields like true Roman Gladiator would have. The twins locked with swords crossed, and the twin in blue fell to one knee. The twin in black, almost sinister said, “I have you now.”

He swung his sword over his head like a helicopter, then aimed it dead on at his brother’s chest. The twin on the floor tried to block the oncoming sword. A tragic miss. His brother’s sword plunged into his chest.

I gasped as the twin fell struggling with his last few breaths. Like a movie scene, the victor’s sword pierced through the young boy’s body. The twin fell to the ground. The sword handle stuck out of his chest and the tip out of his back.

His brother smiled and said, “Finally,” then left through a path on the other side of the clearing.

I bent over and tried to breathe. My body shook. I felt as if someone twisted my stomach like a soaked towel. I took a few steps forward and looked around. I heard nothing, only silence. I hurried to reach the brother lying dead before me.

“Martin, John…,” I whispered. The boy didn’t move. I took another step forward to see his face. As I peered over his shoulder, his haunting open eyes and mouth sent me into a complete earthquake. Panicked, I staggered backwards. My back felt the prickly sting of a Juniper tree. Then I ran. I sobbed, and sprinted as fast as I could. I anticipated seeing the winding driveway that would lead me out of this monstrous nightmare.

  If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch is a wonderfully written novel about two sisters, Carey and Jenessa. At the tender age of five, Carey was kidnapped by her mother and taken to the woods. It is in these woods in which Carey resides for the next ten years of her life. Ten years of abuse, neglect and at times hopelessness. Perhaps the only thing/person, which gets Carey through the struggles, is her baby sister Jenessa. With her mother away most of the time, it is Carey’s job to care for her baby sister. She soon becomes a mother figure to her dear sister. It is Carey who teaches her to read, to clean and it is Carey who tells Jenessa “I Love You” and who makes sure that her sister is safely tucked in at night. These are all things that a mother and father should give to their children, affection, care and love. But these things are not for Carey and Jenessa. They have a drug addicted and mentally ill mother, and Carey was taken from her father at such a young age, she barely remembers him, and Jenessa—no one quite knows who her father is. The picture is painted from the start. Both girls have a troubling existence, the only thing that they have is each other and their camper in the woods. One day however, all of this changes for the two girls when a mysterious man (Carey’s father) and woman (CPS worker) find them in the woods and carry them out of the wilderness and into civilization. 

  What is fascinating about If You Find Me, is the way in which each word, has a purpose. As a reader I was with Carey from start to finish. The connection, the heartache for her character was apparent from the start. Murdoch brilliantly whisked Carey and her sister out of the woods and into civilization. The way in which she showcased their simple curiosity towards everyday things, which those in the civilized world take for granted, was remarkably accomplished. The way that they affectionately called a Hamburger a“Handburger” or the way they marveled at running water, helped to explore just how different the “world” was through their eyes. 

  If You Find Me deals with extremely sensitive subject matter, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, at times difficult to read through, but necessary—necessary because unfortunately, that is a harsh reality for many children in the world, many children who are never saved by a caring father or the CPS. Carey and Jenessa represented the voices of those voiceless children. I appreciated the careful pace of the book, the way that Carey had to learn to trust others, learn to let down her guard, and learn to be loved. Poignantly, Carey was also able to let go and entrust the care of her precious sister with her father, his wife and stepdaughter—a difficult decision, but necessary for the healing and growth of both girls. If You Find Me is that special read which challenges the readers view of the world, forces the reader to view the world through the eyes of another. It is through those eyes that the reader is introduced to a world outside of comfort zones, a world laced with egregious acts, but also, one of hope. Murdoch’s If You Find Me was glaringly real, yet needed, so challenge your worldview, step away from your comfort zone and read If You Find Me.


“Joelle is my Mama, only she’s not here to answer back. In fact, we haven’t seen her in over a month, maybe two at this point. It’s been a worry, the last few days. While we have enough beans to last a week or so, this is the first time Mama has been gone so long without a word.”

“He hasn’t offered his name, and he isn’t familiar to me. But in that instant, hittin’ like a lightnin’ bolt, I know who he it."
