 Elizabeth Miles on Character Cross-Pollination

I would love for the characters in my books (Fury, Envy, and Eternity - due out on September 3!) to meet the girls in the Burn for Burn series by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian. I ripped through Burn for Burn in one day, completely absorbed by the story that addresses many of the same themes I tackle in my books: revenge, karma, cruelty, and friendship. I can't wait to read the second installment, Fire with Fire, which comes out on the same day as Eternity, the gripping conclusion to the Fury series!

Whereas in my books, vengeance is darkly enacted by the Furies (otherworldly goddesses of revenge who take beautiful human form in order to wreak havoc in the lives of wrongdoers), Han and Vivian take a much more realistic approach, offering their three main characters, Lillia, Mary, and Kat, the chance to prove that "what goes around comes around." Of course, just as they do in the Fury series, these characters quickly learn that the desire for revenge is a complicated thing, one with many strings attached.

I suspect that Em, Chase, Skylar, Gabby, Crow, and JD -- my characters, all of whom are negatively impacted (to say the least) by the Furies -- would understand the scenarios that lead Lillia, Mary, and Kat to seek their own vengeance. After all, who hasn't encountered a situation where they fervently wished that karma could be counted on? Who hasn't wanted to teach someone -- a bully, a cheating ex, a frenemy -- a lesson? We all know that "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind," but it's hard to remember through the haze of anger, shame, guilt, or sadness.

As for the Furies, I imagine that Ty, Ali, and Meg would initially approve of Lillia, Mary, and Kat taking matters into their own hands. One less town to visit/terrorize, right? But they'd likely be disappointed by the emergence of the girls' consciences. While readers are afforded only fleeting glimpses of the inner lives of Ty, Ali, and Meg -- and therefore are largely unable to sympathize with their disproportionate form of justice -- the characters in Burn for Burn are much more human (probably because they are human, duh). Lillia, Mary, and Kat, despite being the revenge artists, are not villains. The same could never be said for Ty, Ali, and Meg, who I chose to write about largely because I thought they would make such intriguing villainesses.

The Fury series and the Burn for Burn series take very different approaches to many of the same questions, exploring how easy it is for real, flawed people to make mistakes and how hard it is to make up for them. It would be awesome to hear the characters from both books hash out the concept of revenge and figure out whether sorry is ever really enough.

Review

I liked Fury but Envy was a step up from like and I ended up seriously enjoying it.  This is a book that exceeded the expectations I had built from the previous novel.  There are still faults but I think in the faults I think that Elizabeth leaves room for growth in the next novel.  I must say that the Fury's and their anger and dark ways is how I picture them.  Sometimes I feel that they are not quite just about who the pick and why but they are the Fury's so who am I to judge?

Em (Emily) made some big growth leaps in this one.  I mean in the last one she only seemed to think of herself and how it would all work out for her.  Now she looks beyond herself and is trying to help others around her.  There is a lot of her worrying about how she is attached to the Fury's but that is because it is effecting her overall life.  J.D. wont even talk to her and I was not surprised that outside forces were the cause of that but I also had hopes that she would fight a little more for him.  My real emotions came out for her when she seemed to be loosing everyone around her because of the Fury's.  Her life was spiraling out of her control  as  she tried to get them banished and I'm not even sure  she realized exactly what she was loosing.

Personally I feel that sweet Gabby (the girl that everyone seems set on screwing over) may be the key to everything.  This girl does not have a mean or back stabbing bone in her body and yet everyone overlooks her.  The new girl and target of the Fury Meg (well all of them but she is the one that pegs her out) Skylar is no exception to the "walk over Gabby" club.  This girl infuriated me with her cold heart and inability to think beyond herself.  She wanted to be the top of the High School food chain and better than her sister Lucy and her Mom thought she was.  However despite her past she feels (with a little encouragement) that she deserves better than anyone around her.  In a way I did feel sorry for her but the lengths in which she went through to get what she wanted had my sympathy for her in short supply.

The absence of J.D. and his quirky style left a hole in my heart.  I know he wasn't a huge part of the first novel but when he made his appearances in this one without his signature style I found I missed him more than I thought I would.  That being said there was a new guy introduced: Crow.  He kind if caused some turbulence between J.D. and Em the very few times there was a chance at mending the broken feelings.  Now usually this would piss me off.  Surprisingly it didn't because I don't think he meant to.  Though I have as mixed feelings on if he likes Em or not as she does, for the most part she still just worries about getting J.D. to see her again.  My heart is torn between these two guys that may or may not like Em.  On one hand you have J.D. the friend that has always been there that she never realized how much he meant to her.  Then there is Crow the musically talented bad boy that has that I don't care attitude.  How do you choose?!

While the Fury's aren't quite as prominent and vengeful in this one their presence is always there in the back of your mind.  There is an explanation as to why the Fury's showed up and why their focus remains on the small town of Ascension.  Elizabeth has really drawn me in with this one by answering some questions and then creating a new problem and twist to worry about.  The writing is beautiful and captivating.  I don't think that I will ever be able to look at the Fury's the same or read a book where they are not this strong.

Quotes
Skylar's hair, she noticed, was in rollers, just like the ones Gabby used.  Uh-oh--someone had a girl crush.  Not surprising, really.  Gabby had always had followers.

It was as though Em knew Skylar's secrets.  It was creepy.  And it was official: Em and Skylar were never going to be friends, not really.  Skylar barely nderstood why anyone was friends with Em in the first place.  Sure, she was beautiful.  And smart.  But she was crazy!

She hesitated, watching the rain fall in sheets outside the coffee shop windows.
"I won't kidnap you.." Then he added with a smile, "Even though I'd like to."  Rolling her eyes, she nodded her consent.

Thursday afternoon he texted: We should meet.  Em's heart nearly exploded.
That's all it took, she thought wryly. Boy sees girl attempting sacrifice in graveyard, boy falls back in  love.  Why didn't I think of that before?

**REVIEW** Fury by Elizabeth Miles

It’s winter break in Ascension, Maine. The snow is falling and everything looks pristine and peaceful. But not all is as it seems...

Between cozy traditions and parties with her friends, Emily loves the holidays. And this year’s even better—the guy she’s been into for months is finally noticing her. But Em knows if she starts things with him, there’s no turning back. Because his girlfriend is Em’s best friend.

On the other side of town, Chase is having problems of his own. The stress of his home life is starting to take its toll, and his social life is unraveling. But that’s nothing compared to what’s really haunting him. Chase has done something cruel...something the perfect guy he pretends to be would never do. And it’s only a matter of time before he’s exposed.

In Ascension, mistakes can be deadly. And three girls—three beautiful, mysterious girls—are here to choose who will pay. Em and Chase have been chosen.

Review

Envy was more than Greek Mythology, it was suspense filled and fringed with some horror. This had me hooked from the prologue that in itself made me hold me breath.  The eye catching cover may have pulled me in but it was the pages in between that had me hooked.  There is no doubt in my mind that it was my need to find out what the Furies plan was for Em and Chase that kept me running back to this one every time I had to put it down.

The story is told from both Em and Chase's POV.  They are two teens that have their own weaknesses and ultimately they are what brings them down.  Em doesn't want to feel the way she does but she can't deny that her best friends boyfriend makes her feel special.  When Gabby leaves for break and Em is alone with Zach she can no longer deny the chemistry and though she knows she will regret it she doesn't feel like she can resist something that feels so right.  With Chase his demons lay in a life that is beyond his means in Ascension.  This is a life he struggles to hold onto and has done things he is not so proud of just to stay on top.

Em was someone I both felt attached to and irritated with.  Confusing I know but sometimes her actions were just too much for me.  However I did feel for her and her need to feel special and have someone that cared.  It was her reasoning for why it was okay and how it would all work out that killed me.  Chase was a little easier to like but he was not without his faults.  Chase grew up with not much and after loosing the one person that he considered a friend to popularity he did all he could to get there.  Unfortunately being at the top when people are shallow isn't an east feat and the ghosts of his decisions past haunt him.  Things are this way for both of them for a reason and Miles played her cards well.  Em's downfall was a little harder to swallow but you can't gain the Furies attention by being good right?

The Furies were not up front and center characters in this one.  So if you are looking for a book that focuses solely on them you would have to look elsewhere.  Instead they were intricately woven into the back of the story and they each had their purpose.  Ty was placed into Chase's life and though he feels his heart beats for her it is clear she is there to undo what he has always worked so hard for.  With Em it was a little less clear because the Furies seem to toy with her and when it comes down to it she makes a choice that may or may not be for the best.  I would be lying if I said that I thought the Furies were reasonable because they are not.  To an extent I thought that they went above and beyond on their punishments but who am I to judge?

Elizabeth Miles has created as brutally honest and thrilling novel.  She does not try and glamorize the Furies into something that they are not.  As the reader I ended up feeling for the characters that were singled out by them but at the same time I understood why they were.  Did this make their judgement and punishment okay with me?  Not really but if they walked away without anything that wouldn't have been true to the Greek Furies we know.  There is touch on the suicide subject and some light sexual scenes but nothing I would consider over the top.  Fury was a wonderful start to this series and I will admit the end has me excited to start the next book!

Quotes
But she could only picture herself walking in on one person's arm. There was no way around it: Em had fallen for her best friend's boyfriend.

He was not trailer trash.  Ty didn't think he was trash.  He wasn't going to mess this one up.  He wouldn't let Ty slip through his fingers.

A worming feeling of discomfort began working in Em's stomach.  She wasn't exactly in a mood to defend Chase, but still, the photo-and the fact that it had been so widely circulated-really bothered her.  Weren't people allowed to have secrets anymore?

He didn't wait for her answer.  He shoved his hands in his pockets and squared his shoulders like her was gearing up for a tackle.  He was going to meet Ty, and he had a feeling this would be their last play.

 Mermaids and myths. *happy sigh*

I’m so honored and excited to part of Mermaid and Myth month. However, I’d like to clarify that I love mermen too and a few have contacted me to ask why this event only include mermaids. I told them it’s because girls rule and to simmer down and that maybe if they behaved we’d give them a mermen month someday. They shut up, held their heads high, flexed their washboard abs, and swam away peacefully. But now Mermen Month is something we should consider.

Moving on...

Tiff wanted me to talk about a day in the life of a mermaid author.

Because I live in Florida, I’m lucky enough to start each day with a stroll along a powdery white beach while watching the sunrise and scanning the waves for shimmering tails and fins. I then proceed to do yoga on the shoreline as waves lap against my feet and birds fly over singing me inspirational story ideas. Once I’m renewed and energized by all the beautiful nature around me, I sit in my private beach cabana with my laptop and write stories about all my beloved sea creatures.

Lovely image, isn’t it?

Also, totally NOT TRUE.

Okay, I do live in Florida and I’m only twenty minutes from the beach, but I’m lucky if I get to the beach once a month. The sun rising is what wakes me up--I’m rarely awake early enough to see it rise--and my only morning stroll is to the kitchen for a highly caffeinated cup of coffee. The only tails I see are the ones on my two dogs waiting to go outside and be fed--their tails don’t shimmer but they do wag a lot. I do love yoga, and I always intend to start my day with yoga because it does help me feel better, but I always decide I’ll start doing yoga tomorrow (Note to self: Seriously, start doing yoga tomorrow)
so basically the only workout I get is bicep curling my mug of coffee and York peppermint patties up to my lips. I don’t have a beach cabana, but I do have a really comfy writing chair and that’s where I sit and create my stories. Most days I write (or do writing related stuff) from about 8am until noon. Then I do all this other pain-in-the-butt real life stuff like office work, laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping, etc. At night, I usually try to read or watch a little TV.

I know, I know, so glamorous and magical. What can I say, I’m living the dream.

Thanks so much for having me, Tiff!

*hugs to all the mermaid and myth lovers*

~Karen

**REVIEW** Tangled Tides by Karen Amanda Hooper

Karen was the author that truly rekindled me with my love of all things Mermaid!!  I have always loved them but had not had my heart captured by them in a novel until Tangled Tides.  To this day it is still near and dear to me... My first love!

Yara Jones doesn't believe in sea monsters-until she becomes one. When a hurricane hits her island home and she wakes up with fins, Yara finds herself tangled up in an underwater world of mysterious merfolk and secretive selkies. Both sides believe Yara can save them by fulfilling a broken promise and opening the sealed gateway to their realm, but they are battling over how it should be done. The selkies want to take her life. The merfolk want something far more precious.
Treygan, the stormy-eyed merman who turned Yara mer, will stop at nothing and sacrifice everything to protect his people-until he falls for Yara. The tides turn as Yara fights to save herself, hundreds of sea creatures, and the merman who has her heart. She could lose her soul in the process-or she might open the gateway to a love that's deeper than the oceans.

Review

I have so much love for this book I am not sure I can do it justice in a review and I am trying to do it as spoiler/story free as possible! This is by far the best mermaid book I have ever read and I am not just saying that because of the gorgeous cover!!! My love for this book started early on and only grew as I read it. You can't help but be hooked on this book from the first chapter where Karen thrust you into a world unknown to Yara and makes it almost impossible to put it down( I had to part with it for bathroom breaks and it wasn't easy). This book is filled with so many refreshing and original characters!! There is not only mermaids but selkies, sirens, gorgons and mentions to other mythological creatures.

Yara is the best character to start with I think.  There was NOTHING about her that I did not love.  She is strong willed, caring and does have a bit of a temper at times.  Right at the start she is taken from her home and has to adjust to being a mermaid and where as most characters I find just accept what happens just like that and keep going Yara doesn't.  There is a fight raging in her and she refuses to just go without asking questions and wants a full understanding.  Even if she doesn't want any part of it she does make the best of it eventually but who wouldn't with a handsome Treygan there so swoon over.

Yara is with Rowan (he's selkie) to start there is a lot going on with him that she doesn't know and it does not take her long to figure it out.  However somewhere inside him he really does care for Yara. Once Yara realizes what Rowan`s intentions truly are she realizes Treygan. This also ensures that we don't get sucked into another love triangle (I don't mind them sometimes but this is a refreshing break).  Treygan is easily one of the most difficult swoon worthy guys that I instantly loved.  Even thought he turns Yara into a mer for his own reasons to start he finds himself caring for her.  He has many of his own secrets and a reason behind many of the things he does, even if it does tick you off.  Treygan evokes so much emotion but makes you want to shake him at the same time.

Yara and Treygan are such a beautiful story in their own.  Their love was not instant and was not supposed to be.  Like all great love though what was meant to be wins over what was not supposed to be.  Where Yara starts off disliking him for what he did and he is in it because it is simply what needs to be done.  When they start to break through it is such a beautiful love!! I would be lying if I told you that there weren't parts of this book near the end that made my eyes tear up.

Other characters that deserve a mention are: Kimber, Delmar, Pango and Nixie.  Kimber is by far my next favorite female!  I see her as being not only beautiful and sweet but she is so strong in her own way and I can't say much else without ruining her and I would not want to do that!! Oh, I should put it out there that she is Delmars wife.  As much as I want to go into details about all of these wonderful characters I don`t want to take all your time up while you should be out getting this book!!

Overall Karen has created such an amazing world.  The characters are brilliantly written and you come to like each one for their differences. Right from the first chapter you will be hooked and wont want to stop!!  You will love the unique things you learn about each character and all of the amazing things and connections the merfolk have!  There is all you could ever want in this book: love, deceit, myths and so much more AWESOME!!  The ending leaves you wanting more but not empty.  It is a must read and was one of my favorite reads last year!!  So if you don`t have this book and want a break from the vamps, shifters and angels but still want the myth and romance PICK THIS UP!!! Hey even if you don't want the break pick it up, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!
