Free Souls by Susan Kaye Quinn Cover Reveal

Free Souls
by Susan Kaye Quinn
(Book Three of the Mindjack Trilogy) Now Available!

When your mind is a weapon, freedom comes at a price.
Four months have passed since Kira left home to join Julian’s Jacker Freedom Alliance, but the hole in her heart still whistles empty where her boyfriend Raf used to be. She fills it with weapons training, JFA patrols, and an obsessive hunt for FBI agent Kestrel, ignoring Julian’s worries about her safety and repeated attempts to recruit her for his revolutionary chat-casts. When anti-jacker politician Vellus surrounds Jackertown with the National Guard, Kira discovers there’s more to Julian’s concerns than she knew, but she’s forced to take on a mission that neither want and that might be her last: assassinating Senator Vellus before he can snuff out Julian’s revolution and the jackers she’s come to love.

All of the Mindjack stories are available on Amazon, Barnes&Noble, Kobo, and iTunes (Note Free Souls is not yet available on Kobo or iTunes)
Early Praise for Free Souls
“Quinn paints a picture of a not-too-distant America where politicians inflame the hatred of one section of the populace for another—all for their own gain—and you worry that her world is not so far off from our own.”
— Dianne Salerni, author of We Hear the Dead, The Caged Graves, and the forthcoming The Eighth Day

"Free Souls starts with a bang and doesn't let up. Like a mash-up of all your favorite science-fiction adventures from Star Wars to The Legend of Korra, it blends nonstop action, nail-biting escapes, and great romance. I absolutely loved it! A great series conclusion—a must-read."
— Leigh Talbert Moore, author of Rouge and The Truth About Faking

“Susan did it again. Free Souls was WOW! I expected Kira to step up to her role as heroine but not like this. Surprises kept coming until the very end which tied up more loose ends than I knew existed. Warning: Don't start reading until you have time to finish. I didn't want to put Free Souls down for a second. It's that kind of book.”
— Sher A. Hart, Goodreads Review

**REVIEW** Dead Heat by Lisa Nowak

Alex is a machine whisperer. He can tell what’s wrong with a broken-down car with a touch. But his gift can’t save him from the brutality of his meth-addict father. For two years, Alex experienced kindness through Cole, his mentor. Now Cole’s dead, and the violence in Alex’s life is escalating.
When Cole reappears as a ghost, Alex clings to the tenuous link. Then he learns Cole might’ve sacrificed his chance to cross over. Jade, the first girl to look beyond Alex’s past, assures him Cole can reach the Other Side—if Alex escapes from his dad. But a previous terrifying attempt has convinced Alex it’s impossible. Unless he can find the courage to try, his friend may be earthbound forever.

Review

Lisa Nowak has made her talent clear once again in this novel.  I loved Running wide Open, Getting Sideways and Driven but this was something different.  Well it included racing like her others did but this was so much more than that.  What I have always loved about her books is that there is always something more.  Even when they are lighthearted, there is a more serious issue being dealt with somewhere in the book.  With Dead Heat it was much more intense than I had expected.  I mean the entire book was not what I had expected.  From the description I thought that there would be a paranormal feel to the book but really there was only an edge because of Cole's ghost.  Even then people communicate with the dead all the time so it's not that abnormal for a ghost to appear to someone that was important to them right?

Alex has had a hard life.  His father is a Meth addict and abusive and his mother is in no position to help him.  School is a bust because of issues and his father taking him out at all hours to "help" him.  His escape is visiting the track to watch races and dream of working on the cars.  When his dream becomes a reality Alex is not sure if he can really count on it.  Cole the driver he helps however has other plans.  The two become close, like family but all good things end right?  Loosing Cole throws Alex into a quick downward spiral and things don't look good.  This is only the start of many things to come.  Meeting a girl that will look beyond his past, learning that some things are worth fighting for and there is always another choice.  Sometimes this even means turning to the people you least expect.

As far as characters go Alex is very well written.  I often found myself feeling sorry for him, even though I know he would hate the pity.  Despite his hard life and horrid up bringing he is a nice and gentle person.  Not someone that would win a popularity contest but he keeps to himself and enjoys working on motors and anything electronic really.  This is a talent that he has had since he was young and I'm not sure talent can even really cover it.  The kid can touch anything and know almost right away what is wrong with something.  However this little talent doesn't give him much satisfaction when his father learns of it.  My heart broke several times but for the most part Alex pushed on.  Loosing Cole killed his positive attitude towards many things but there was always fight in him.

There wasn't much for other characters in this book beyond Alex, Cole his dad and his mom for awhile but there is a few other characters that come in later that are seriously important.  Jade is the biggest one.  She really just wouldn't give up on him.   Despite the fact that she really doesn't know him she is determined to make him see her, give her a chance.  Even when she sees the type of world he has grown up in and still lives in she wants to be with him.  My heart practically melted when she continually showed her support for him.  She even believed him about seeing his friends ghost and wanted to help him get Cole to cross over.  Jade does have a past of her own and I think that maybe this is why she is so good for Alex and can look past where he is and see who he is.

Where I was thrown was that this isn't about a boy and a ghost.  Heck it isn't even about a boy that is abused.  Well it's about that but it's more about someone that realizes there is other ways and there is help.  Alex grew and became more than just a boy, more than just some kid that lives every day holding his breath when his father is home.  Lisa created intense moments where the abuse was real and would bring tears to your eyes but she also created a realistic situation with this.  It's not an easy thing to write I imagine but think of how hard it would be to actually live it!

Dead Heat was an intense and heart breaking read but it had meaning and a good story.  I found myself heart broken, angry and smiling throughout.  Books that bring out emotions especially strong ones have always been a favourite of mine.  This is the kind of read that leaves an impression, leaves you thinking long after you are done.  I have had the luck of reviewing all of Lisa's books and hope to do so with any future books she releases as well.  Her talent is evident and I have been impressed every time but I think the moral and meaning that is put in this book touched me the most!

Quotes
I'm such a moron.  I got a couple of fingers that don't work too good ever since the old man slammed his trunk hood on 'em, and sometimes cramp up.  After three years, you'd think I'd learn to deal.

He tells me I'm smart and talented and got a great future ahead of me.  My life was never any prize, but now Cole's a part of it, I can see just how bad it used to be.

It's hard work, but after a while stuff starts making more sense, and I do better on my tests.  Cole's so proud you'd think he was making them grades himself.  I still can't see why it's such a big deal, but I get a kick out of doing something that makes him that happy.

"Don't lie to me!  I just saw it."  His image glows real bright, like he's about to nuke out on me.  For a second, I wonder is ghosts can explode.

Excerpt

Derek’s warm hands cupped my face, his thumb brushed against my barely parted lips as the green in his eyes deepened, giving way to the inner turmoil he felt with what he was about to do, and I held my breath. In the span of a heartbeat, his eyes closed and his lips were pressed against mine, moving in a soft, slow way. I kissed him back, allowing his lips, the feel of his touch, and the taste of his tongue to erase everything else about tonight. I forgot about the neighbors that could be watching. I forgot about Missy asleep on the couch and Kyle passed out a few feet away in the Jeep. I forgot about everything including what this moment meant and how it would change everything between us. I only thought of how I’d finally gotten what I
had always wanted—Derek.
He pulled away, releasing my lips and my face at the same time. “How was that, any better than Cal Carlson?”
I didn’t respond at first. Instead, I raised my fingertips to touch my lips, saddened from the departure of his and curious to see if they felt any different, because I felt different, everything felt different. That kiss had changed everything that ever was between us, and I wondered if Derek knew, if he understood what had just happened, what he’d just done.
“Yeah, it was,” I said, my voice sounding soft and breathy. I dropped my hand to my side and swallowed hard. Blinking once, I realized Derek was staring at me, smirking like a fool. “It definitely didn’t suck,” I confirmed flashing him a mirror image smile of his own.
“Good to know,” he said with a little nod of his head, his eyes the perfect mixture of smugness and sheepishness. He shoved his hands back into his front pockets before sauntering back to his Jeep.

Excerpt from Stones to Ashes

Wirt screwed his eyes shut, wishing fervently that he was somewhere, anywhere else. Right now, being back with Joan and Peter was looking an awful lot more appetizing. First, though, he had to find some way to get out of here…

Wirt doubled up as his stomach suddenly cramped. For a moment, he though he had been hit, but that hypothesis went by the wayside as the feeling spread to every muscle in his body at once. As far as Wirt knew, and thanks to some of his earlier misadventures he did know, not even three people could manage to hit you everywhere simultaneously. Wirt forced his eyes open, and then quickly shut them again, because the golden radiance surrounding him was simply too bright to look though. Around him, the gasps of the three bullies were clearly audible.

“He’s glowing, Rich. Why is he glowing?”

“How should I know? Look, just grab him.”

“You grab him. He could be radioactive or something, the way he’s glowing.”

“Oh, so it’s all right for me to grab radiation boy, is it?”

The sounds of a scuffle came to Wirt, but they were quickly replaced by silence. He didn’t really care, because by now the unpleasant sensation running through his body had reached unbearable levels, feeling as though every scrap of him were being pulled in a different direction.

As suddenly as it had come, the sensation passed. Wirt had to concentrate just to breathe, and he stood like that for long seconds. He didn’t dare open his eyes, at least until it occurred to him that the three older boys might still be there waiting to hit him. That made his eyes snap open so quickly that for a second he couldn’t make sense of anything around him. When he did, Wirt took a step back, and that itself was surprising enough, given that there should have been a chain link fence in the way. Instead, he was standing in the middle of a field, with no sign of any fences anywhere in sight.

The Alchemists Academy Book 2:
Elemental Explosions by Kailin Gow

A new student has entered The Alchemists Academy, and he brings with him an explosive power that threatens the Academy and the legend of Merlin. Wirt thought he was the only bad boy at the Academy, but he was wrong. Not only is Roland Black worse than Wirt, but a new teacher had replaced one of their beloved teachers, and she has more planned for Wirt and his friends than just lesson plans. Alana, his crush has grown prettier, and now he is rivals for her attention with not only his best friend Spencer, but newcomer Roland, as well. On top of that, it is their second year, and the year where all the students must pass a test to move on to the Elite Class at the Academy. The Elite Class is the only class in the third year at the Academy, and the students who fail will be sent home, others will face something even deadlier.

The moment didn’t last long, and Wirt opened his gift in a shower of wrapping paper. His parents looked on, those same smiles present on their faces. He looked down into the box, only to see that it was empty. Or not quite empty. Inside was a square of paper, on which careful handwriting stood out clearly. Wirt picked it up and read the words “Merry Christmas, beloved son. You cannot see, taste, or smell your gift, but you will know it when you feel it.”

“What?” Wirt asked. “I don’t understand. Is this some sort of riddle?”

His dream mother and father didn’t say anything. They just smiled and stared at the box in a way that suggested that Wirt was missing something. Not knowing what else to do, Wirt reached down into it, searching it by feel in case there was something at the bottom that he might not have noticed.

There was. Wirt yelped as something closed around his wrist, and tried to yank his arm back. It didn’t move, and as Wirt looked down, he saw dark fingers clasped on his arm. They weren’t just dark-skinned; they were absolutely black, as though carved from onyx or jet. They were as implacable as stone too, refusing to relinquish their grip as Wirt tried to jerk away.

“Help me,” he said to his parents, but they just shook their heads sadly, staring in that way parents had that told you that whatever was happening was for your own good.

The arm pulled at Wirt, and it pulled with far more strength than Wirt had ever experienced. He tried his best to brace himself against it, but slowly, inexorably, the hand drew him towards the box. That swirled with darkness now, and Wirt got the feeling that it was suddenly far deeper than it had been a moment ago.

He found out as the hand dragged him in, though how he fit into the box, Wirt wasn’t sure. He only knew that he fell. Only after a second or two, he wasn’t falling. He was walking along a tunnel instead. The walls were of natural earth, while huge tree roots showed up at intervals like roof beams and standing stones lined the walls, marks on them seeming to tell a story that Wirt could not understand.
