{Weekly Report} Part 1 0f 3: Received from Publishers

Weekly Report is my way of showing you from week to week (most of the time) what new books I received and what has gone on in the past week.  So basically it's a report for all the awesome that I got and shared!  Originally I posted IMM by Story Siren this is just my version with a little extra ;)
*note * all book names lead to GR page.

So I have had a little time off of my Weekly Report because of the Indie Girl March Event that I just hosted.  Needless to say this has created a pile of books that I have to share with you!  Thing is that I know I wont have much coming in this month so I have decided to split it into three different posts: Received from Publisher, Gifted/Won & Bought.  This week I have Received from Publisher up to check out.  I am overwhelmed by the amount of amazing books I got this month and last from the wonderful publishers I work with.

Review

The House of Night books for the longest time were like an obsession for me but then they started to drag a little for me.  Now I still buy them when they come out because I can't help but want to know what's going to happen.  The novellas however are spectacular and though this one was about Neferet who I have never cared for, I am a sucker for the glimpse into what makes characters who they are.

Neferet was forced to grow up before she should have.  Her mother passed during the birthing of her stillborn brother and her father pressed her to become the lady/mistress of the house.  Though she was at first pleased with her father finally showing her attention, it quickly turned to dread.  Despite my dislike for her dread forced itself into my gut like a lead weight.  Between the drinking and his actions her Dad both ticked me off and terrified the crap out of me.  I did understand her urgency and her reasons for doing what she did.  Problem is it also proved that the darkness in her runs deeper than I could have ever imagined.

This novella has serious depth and is dark like the person it is written about.  I found myself held like a moth to a light.  The writing was wonderful and rekindled my love for these books.  Even with Neferet not being a favourite character of mine I was still interested and invested in this story.  P.C. cast and Kirsten Cast really do shine in these novellas and even if your love for HON has fizzled give these a go because they are like the original gold the series started out with.

**REVIEW** The Rules by stacey Kade

1. Never trust anyone.
2. Remember they are always searching.
3. Don’t get involved.
4. Keep your head down.
5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”
But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

Review

With a unique premise and page to page tension this one surprised me.  I do have to say that it wasn't what I had expected though.  From the description I was expecting something  more sci-fi but once I got into it, it became clear that wasn't the case.  The high school part of the novel really dominates and though this didn't disappoint me it did surprise me.

The story itself is filled with stereotypical characters but is based around Ariane who is a social outcast for a reason.  She stays away from everyone because it is a rule, well it is actually several rules.  Though she did break the rules to have a friend but even Jenna isn't who she seems.  Then you have your high school mean girl, Rachel.  You know the one that is only happy when making everyone else around her miserable, including the jock guy that is a part of the "in crowd" but is sick of the b.s.: Zane.  Take into account that Ariane is half extraterrestrial and has some serious powers hidden away and you know things are going to go wrong.

There is a big part of me that felt sorry for Ariane.  It just seemed that everyone around her wanted to use her for one thing or another and she just wanted to melt into the crowd and remain unnoticed.  Her one really redeeming quality was that after all she had been through she felt a need to protect those that were bullied.  Seems that this is when her alien side shows itself and when she truly forgets the rules.  Not that Ariane is a particularly weak character but she didn't stand out really until 3/4 of the way through the book and then she really started to shine and become a memorable character.

The romantic interest Zane actually has chapters written from his point of view as well, which is something I have always enjoyed because it gives you a more in depth sense of the back story.  Zane doesn't have an easy life, his dad basically hates him because he is like his mother and nothing like him or his brother.  This makes his home life a living hell and after his mother left it made him realize that being a part of the populars and torturing others is not what he really wants.  Ariane is different and piques his interest but what starts off as a plan for the both of them turns into something neither of them expected.

I realize my review of this book is up and down but that's because my feeling rode out that way as I read.  The ending however was amazing and was a bit of a cliff hanger which means I will be picking up the next book.  That and everything that happens toward the end really points to something so much bigger than what had gone on in the rest of the novel.  My biggest hope is that my unanswered questions will get cleared up in the next instalment or at least a few of them.  I did like this read and would recommend it to people that want some contemporary with a sci-fi edge or those that are just getting into sci-fi.

Quotes
I resembled my mom's side of the family-the height, dark hair color, blue eyes, and the genetic lack of stick up my ass. -Zane

Unfortunately, reality had been far less generous.  I was short, thin, and pale, and slightly "off" in some way no one could ever quite put their finger on. -Ariane

She looked over at me expectantly, and I felt like she was about to suggest we synchronize our watches.  Or since neither of us is wearing one, compaire cell phone times at least."Yes, ma'am," I said.Someone, somewhere, should put her in charge of an army.

Reaching up to touch her face, I could feel her delicate bones beneath soft skin-she never seemed fragile or small except for when I touched her.  Her personality made her seem bigger, more powerful.

Shattered Perfection:
The Diary of an Eating Disordered Mind
By: Piper Caleb

How did I end up admitting myself to an eating disorder treatment center?I wish I could pin point one thing that sent me on this path, but it’s not that simple.
It wasn’t the fact that a boy cheated on me, or that I had a tough time growing up. It wasn’t the fact that I was verbally abused, or the fact that eating disorders run in my genes. It wasn’t me suddenly getting recognition as a ballerina when I got mono and dropped 25 pounds; it wasn’t a cry for help.
It was all of those things combined…and much more.
In my diary entries you will get to see how the mind of this eating disordered girl works. You will learn a lot more about me as a person—no holding back—and what brought me to rock bottom; and how I slowly fought my way back.

About Piper Caleb:

Piper Caleb is a 25 year old aspiring New Adult author from Lubbock, Texas. She started dancing when she was 3 years old and was classically trained as a ballerina. **REVIEW** IMPOSTER by Jill Hathaway

What if a killer took control of you?
Vee Bell’s gift (or curse) of “sliding”—slipping into the mind of another person and experiencing life, briefly, through his or her eyes—has been somewhat under control since she unwillingly witnessed the horrific deaths of her classmates six months ago.
But just as things are getting back to normal, Vee has a very bizarre experience: she loses consciousness and finds herself in a deserted area, at the edge of a cliff, with the broken body of the boy who took advantage of her on the rocks below.
As Vee finds herself in stranger and stranger situations with no memory of getting there, she begins to suspect that someone she knows has the ability to slide—and that this “slider” is using Vee to exact revenge on his or her enemies.

Review

Jill is freaking amazing. I was surprised by just how much I loved Slide and Impostor was no different. Her writing is smooth and easy to just fall into and the characters are vivid, realistic and easily liked. There has not been a single character in these books that I didn't get a clear cut picture from and this is not just main characters but everyone in the book. It's like having a picture in front of you so you see the entire thing not just a couple people and the rest is blurred out. Lets face it, it's better to read knowing the entire picture not just a piece.

Vee lived through her first ordeal only to realize life can get more strange. Her Aunt that stopped talking to her mother 20 years before shows up and seems to take over and at the same time strange things start happening. I couldn't blame Vee for trying to connect her odd estranged Aunt to the odd occurrences. Waking up while driving and waking up walking to your mothers grave wouldn't be a picnic. Then top that off with the fact that your best friend seems to be pulling away from you and life can get more strange and more horrible.

How could anyone not love Vee?! The girl is seriously down to earth... Well mostly. She does tend to over think some things but when you can slide into other people the possibilities are fairly endless. I also loved the change in her, it wasn't drastic and she kept much of her original Vee traits but she also became a little more of who she was I think. She valued her relationship with her sister and became a little more daring when it came to Rollins. This made her development easy to believe and enjoy. Nothing drastic like trying to become who she was before and a part of the "in" crowd but developing into more than the resentful girl that lost her mother and was betrayed. No that's not even really Vee from the first book but it touches the surface.

Rollands kind of ticked me off in this one. I may be alone in this one but really he wasn't very sensitive in the start. When he seemed to be blowing Vee off for Anna I wanted to smack him. Seriously. Even when he and Vee worked things out all I could think is WTF?! Like when Vee gets grounded so he decides its cool to take Anna to the movie thy were supposed to see together... What the heck is that? Maybe I'm overreacting but regardless I was NOT happy. Either was Vee but she kept on rationalizing everything and the fact that he kept on saying there was nothing there but friendship helped. When it came down to it I guess he came through for her but I expected more from him.

In my original review here I also mentioned Sophie, Samantha an the Aunt: Lydia. However this made my review really long and in fear of loosing you guys I cut it out. Just know that I did feel these people needed mentioning but I didn't want to kill the book with a dragging review. I am honestly just as impressed with this novel as I was with the first. Jill will get you hooked with Slide and then feed your addiction with Impostor. If you haven't picked up Slide yet do so because you need to read Impostor!!

Quotes
I speak up.  "Because everyone walks with the devil at one point or another.  Even Goodman Brown's perfect little wife, Faith, was hanging around with the rest of the townspeople in the forest, worshipping Satan.  It just means that everyone makes bad choices in their lives.  No one's perfect."

His eyes are dark as night.  The metal of his lip ring gleams in the moonlight.  Running my hands through his hair, I lean and touch my lips to his.  He follows my movements, opening his mouth and letting his tongue caress mine gently.

Something warns me to be careful about where I let this woman take me.  After all, what do I know about her?  She lied about her fiance back in California.  She was living her life with a false name.

{Blog Tour} Dear Cassie by Lisa Burstein **REVIEW**

I am super excited to have made it onto this tour!! I loved Dear Cassie
and plan on picking up everything Lisa pumps out after this read!

What if the last place you should fall in love is the first place that you do?
You’d think getting sent to Turning Pines Wilderness Camp for a month-long rehabilitation “retreat” and being forced to re-live it in this journal would be the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.
You’d be wrong.
There’s the reason I was sent to Turning Pines in the first place: I got arrested. On prom night. With my two best friends, who I haven’t talked to since and probably never will again. And then there’s the real reason I was sent here. The thing I can’t talk about with the guy I can’t even think about.
What if the moment you’ve closed yourself off is the moment you start to break open?
But there’s this guy here. Ben. And the more I swear he won’t—he can’t—the deeper under my skin he’s getting. After the thing that happened, I promised I’d never fall for another boy’s lies.
And yet I can’t help but wonder…what if?

Review

Okay so I didn't expect to be as pulled in by this one as I was.  The expectation that I would enjoy it was there but not to the extent that I did.  The writing was nothing short of spectacular and I have to admit I read the entire book in one sitting.  I may have ignored a work out and cooking an actual meal (hamburger helper ruled that night) just because I had no desire to put it down.

The story revolves around the aftermath of a Prom night gone really wrong and Cassie is the one that takes the fall for most of it.  Sent to a rehabilitation camp for teens was not Cassie's cup of tea but either was jail.  Now she is stuck in the middle of nowhere stuck with a guy that won't give up, a girl that won't shut up and another that just won't talk.  Not to mention the secret that she is holding in, this secret broke m heart early on in the novel when I started getting an idea of what happened.  Cassie has problems and shuts herself out but the point of the camp may be to "fix" her supposed addiction to Mary Jane but it turns out to be more than that.

Cassie is definitely an angst filled girl.  This however does not make her weak.  Oh no it does not.  Instead she is snarky, closed off and may have a bit of a foul mouth.  I can't say I personally minded it, it was part of who she was and part of her shield.  Her self punishment was hard to read and though part of me understands what it is like to feel sorrow like she did it wasn't for the same reason but I still felt for her all the same.  Some may see her as weak and sad to start but once you get deeper into the story and see her open up a little, you see not a weak girl but a broken one.  I loved Cassie from start to finish but you have to keep an open mind and heart when it comes down to it.

As much as I loved Cassie I loved Ben.  Upon first meeting him I thought "dear god no!" not another hot guy that will snark and argue his way in.  Not that I mind guys like that in certain books but I hoped for something more with Cassie.  Turns out Ben was exactly what I wanted to see.  He has his own attitude, a twisted sense of humour when needed and was not the type to easily give up.  Though the reasons for him being at the camp remained unclear for most of the book you just knew he was different.  Ben was into finding out about the people around him and cared about more than himself.  He pushed Cassie in ways that both pulled her in and at times angered her but every step of the way he was only trying to get her to care and wanted to care for her.

Dear Cassie was a heart wrenching and addictive read.  It's the kind of read that can bring about many of your emotions as you read and really connect with the characters.  There is growth throughout and it makes you think.  There is so much depth and meaning that I really don't know how anyone couldn't love this read and would recommend it to just about everyone.  The only people that wouldn't like this is ones that don't like contemporary reads that will make you feel and won't let you go until the very last page.
