Review

I am really not sure where to start with this review.  Did I love it? No.  Did I hate it?  No.  Basically I remain indifferent.  There is so much potential but I can't tell if it fell short or my periods of confusion ruined it for me.  Trust me I was more than excited for this one, more than I have been for a book in awhile, just the sight of the book got me excited.  Maybe it's my lack of true knowledge on the saints these girls were named after that was the problem or it could have been the abstract way that the story was presented.  I just felt lost at times and wish that I hadn't.

The story flips around from girl to girl so you get a glance at each of their lives.  Lucy the wild rich girl that would say or do anything to stay at the top, Cecilia (CeCe) the wild child run away that reaches for he dream of being a noticed singer and Agnes the one hat loves with all her heart every time without exception.  The girls each unique in their own way had a common link: death. One drowned in a puddle, one overdosed and the other committed suicide. They don't know this and when they meet don't seem to care for one another, rather than Agnes who seems indifferent to the others.  Being stuck with each other though does force them to try and accept each other, even if they don't know why they should.

The girls themselves were interesting and individual.  There was no mistaking one for another, yet sometimes their stories just blurred together.  When it cam to Agnes I found myself getting frequently  frustrated and thought of her as weak.  I know loving isn't a weakness but the fact that she could be down on herself and attempt to take her own life over a cheater drove me.  She wasn't really that girl in the end though.   Out of the three I think I ended up understand Agnes the best and accepted the choices she made but it took awhile.  CeCe never really affected me but I loved the strength in her character.  She was not afraid to go after what she wanted.  Although when she didn't get it her snark went through the roof!  This was fun at times by others I wanted to tell her to take a breath.  Lucy was kind of the middle girl, not weak but not strong either.  Her entire being was about status so she did what she had to do.

The amount of confusion and frustration that had built up inside of me by the end of this one is undeniable.  The saddest part?  I will probably read the next one.  Despite all it's flaws and jumping POV's there was a serious amount of action in the end and even a little sacrifice  so I have this idea in my head that it's all going to get better.  Not to mention if book two has a cover anywhere as attractive as this one I would have a hard time saying no to it.   I know this is a relatively short review but as I said to start I am kind of indifferent and kind if want some more of you to read it to see if maybe there was something fundamental that I missed.

**REVIEW** Destined by Ali Cross

Choosing is a bad idea, because Desi always makes the wrong one, and sometimes there are no do-overs. Certainly not this time, when all has been lost and Desi can’t even save herself, let alone her friends. For Desi, the hardest thing is letting someone help her, to accept their sacrifice on her behalf. But that’s exactly what she’ll have to do in order to save the worlds from Helena’s destruction.
The goddess of Helheimer, long imprisoned by Desi’s father, Loki, is free at last, and she’s bent on reclaiming what once was hers. The nine worlds will be drawn into war, over Hell, over Earth, with innocent humans meaningless collateral. While Michael and the Gardians of Asgard, along with the golden-armored Valkyrie lead the battle for freedom, it’s Desi who holds the destiny of all the worlds in her hands.
Can she set aside her doubts, once and for all, and claim the gifts that are hers to bear? Can she accept the sacrifice that is made for her and Become all that she was created to be?
Her final choice will define not only her future, but the fate of humankind, forever more.

Review

For the love of all things Ali PICK THIS BOOK UP!  If you haven't started this series yet I don't know what you are waiting for.  Though I have enjoyed Ali's writing and her characters immensely, I loved this one with every bit of my being.  I know that sounds a little strong but you know what I felt so many emotions while reading this one that I really don't know where to start.  As a reader you know that every book is good or bad for it's own reasons.  I love this one for the fact that it made me feel so much and it gave you a little bit of everyone as you read.  This series has so much to give but I feel that this particular book gave the most.

We pick up with Desi still lost, Micheal is fighting to find her and well James and Miri are together away from it all but their thoughts are still with Desi.  Things are going on and it is clear that soon there will be more than just a battle to find Desi but maybe a battle for the Earth as we know it.  The story kind of revolves around saving Desi and everything that it takes to save the world.  Not just this one but basically all nine.  Desi has to learn to accept and embrace all that she is in order to do this and lets face it she has had her doubts in the past.  Luckily all of her friends have enough faith in her and love her enough to help show her the way.

My love for Desi has only grown with each book.  Though at times her self doubt and lack of belief in self worth were enough to make me scream, I love her all the same.  She has come such a long way since Become and I can't even describe the love I had for her by the end.  All of the doubt, belief, hate and love turned her into someone/something amazing.  To say that she grew as a character would be an understatement.  Desi evolved, became more than just a character that you want to read.  She became someone that you could adore and feel for.  It was like at every turn she either made me smile, worry or pulled at my heart.  There are no real words to describe what Desi became or how she got there.  The journey that led her there was not easy or smooth but a test at every single turn.

There was also much more of James in this book.  I will confess that I have always had a soft spot for him.  Even in the start when he was destructive and playing against the good in people I kind of loved him.  My love was not misplaced and I lay claim to this awesome YA guy.  MINE!!  James has become the good bad guy.  The best of both worlds really and as much as I like to think it is all because of my undying love for him, I know it is Miri that truly caused this change.  Though you don't see much of Miri in this book her presence is almost constant when it comes to James.  Even if that just means she is in his thoughts.  Miri though not there in body is there in spirit.  That girl is loved by everyone that knows her and as much as I love James he is lucky to be loved by Miri.

I would like to say that the romance resides between Michael and Desi but really there is so much more romance in this one.  However because I don't want to destroy it I'm just going to talk about Michael and Desi.  Really their relationship is a big pillar in this series.  These two have fought for each other for so long, longer than Desi knew for awhile.  Their love isn't always easy and frequently one or the other feels unworthy but the biggest thing is that they always fight for each other.  This couple is completely and utterly devoted to each other.  There is room to love others but ultimately it is their love that will do great things.  Even when the end was knocking both for Desi and Michael and both for different reasons they thought of each other.  Desi and Michael could be one of those epic couples like Romeo and Juliet but without the confusion and killing themselves part.

Destined also had the perfect finish.  I loved that Ali took her time with it.  Often I find that the end is abrupt and I feel like I have missed something or there  is supposed to be more and there isn't.  This ending however didn't leave any loose ends to me.  Everything was tied up and left open where needed.  By left open I mean that it's not all clean cut, I find when it is too perfect it also doesn't feel right.  Everyone that is left seems to have a place and a purpose now.  You also get a much better look into the origin of Loki and Desolation.  I almost forgot to mention that.  Not that I ever felt I didn't know enough but there were things I learned that I didn't even know I was missing.

There are many twists and surprises in this book.  I mean even I that has read every book was surprised and shocked almost 3 times in the first 9%.  The little extras that were put in place from things I had read all along blew my mind!!   Knowing that this is the last of the Desolation series does sadden me to a point but it also gives me something to look forward to: whatever Ali pumps out next.  As a writer she continues to grow and I will follow her work as long as she continues to write.  This series is not perfect for everyone but let me tell you there can't be many out there that wouldn't enjoy it!  I will confidently say that you should give this series a chance.  The books get better as they go and Destined being the final book really closes it all with a bang!!

 Quotes
I was ill-prepared for this fight-she wore armor while I wore a kilt, a tunic, my sword.  And then I thought, I have my sword.  What need have I more?

And I understood.  Helonius has been his brother, his companion through what might have been centuries, eons even.  And Helena had treated his life as though it meant nothing.

"Well, you can touch me."  She looked at me with that infuriating blend of cute and sexy that drove me wild.  Except right then it only pissed me off.

I scream, stumbling backward and falling on my butt because I trip over myself.  Nice.  At least I didn't wet my pants- a distinct possibility given how scared I am.

That's a laugh.  Because I know exactly who I am-that's the problem.  I'm the girl who nothing works out for.  I always screw everything up.  What's the point of being who I am if I never get it right?

Review

Where has this book been hiding?!  Seriously I am unsure as to why this gem has not been more widely talked about!!  I mean it was hard to put this down and I mean that quite literally.  I walked around reading it, did laundry single handed so I didn't have to put it down and drank lots of coffee in place of meals that I was too involved in the book to make.  The only time I put it down was when I left the house.  Didn't help that it started to snow as I read it.  Ya, over active imagination + actual snowfall while reading this does keep you moving because you want to know it all ends well.

The story was both interesting and eerie.  When a huge storm blows in and school closes early some get left behind.  Seven students and one teacher are stuck in the school as the snow piles up.  And piles up is not an exaggeration by any means.  The snow reaches the second story windows!  I would be loosing my mind.  This is only made worse by the fact that their cell phones won't work, the power goes out an no one seems to be coming for them.  Their only saving grace is that they are in a high school.  High Schools have supplies that are needed like food, blankets and other things that teens need to survive.  I worried that a few of the kids would go all Lord of the Flies on he others but for the most part they seemed to work together.

Scotty the main voice in this book is really a lot more laid back than I had expected.  At first I thought he would be a lot more take charge but when it comes down to it he really just goes with the flow.  This was both good and bad for me.  As I said I expected him to be more take charge and I was disappointed a few times with his.  Though his passive behaviour did help certain circumstances.  He was also the voice of reason at times though and this is when the passive ways paid off.    When it comes to things like lighting a fire inside the school and food Scotty was the one to make people stop and think before they acted.  Basically all in all his narration and look into the horrifying incident was interesting.

The other characters were all so different, yet the band of misfits that they created worked.  Basically you had everyone from the bad boy to the loner to the popular girls.  A little of everything in between.  Though Elijah seriously freaked me out for awhile.  He gave me goosebumps and a couple of times I thought him and Les were "planning" something.  What they were planning I really don't know but I was positive there was going to be something big with them.  There was also some awkward moments because of the girls.  You can't just throw 5 guys (5 TEENAGE guys) with these beautiful girls and not expect a certain amount of tension.  Despite everything I grew kind of attached to each of the characters for their individuality and the loss that they suffered stuck me as well.  I felt I knew each one about as well as they knew each other in the end.  Which may not have been close but you had a better idea of exactly who they were.

The real star though was the storm.  I know that sounds crazy but it kind of had a mind of its own as well.  Micheal did a marvelous job at portraying just how vicious these storms can be.  Many places get hit with tornadoes, hurricanes and earth quakes but snow storms are seriously underrated as far as disasters go.  Though in this book the terrifying possibility is brought to life and the fact that not everyone makes it only makes it more real.  The storm starts as any other but quickly shows its full terror.  Then like any good scare there is those moments where you feel hope because things slow down but then things come back ten fold to get you.

This book seriously had me addicted.  Its only real downfall for me was the ending.  I just felt it could have been a little more than it was.  Basically it was one of the more abrupt endings I have seen but it also leaves it open for what you think should happen.  Not everyone's cup of tea but the book as a whole makes up for it.  There is tension, hope, fear and loss all throughout and there are times that you believe every moment could be their last.  It wasn't like anything I have read lately but it presented a scary possibility that left me shivering!

Quotes
I'd never seen this much snow fall this fast.  But I'd never heard of a snowplow getting stuck in the snow either.  It was like a fish drowning in water: Snow was its element, what it was made for.

The day hadn't been all that bad.  I mean, yeah, there was the whole crapping-in-a-pudding-can thing, and it was nearly as cold inside now, but there'd been encouraging things too.

If this was a movie, this is the point where Krista would've leaned over and kissed me.  "For luck," she would've said, like Princess Leia in Star Wars.  But she didn't.  I think you've figured out by now that this isn't about boy-gets-girl.  It's about survival.

**REVIEW** The Infects by Sean Beaudoin

Seventeen-year-old Nero is stuck in the wilderness with a bunch of other juvenile delinquents on an “Inward Trek.” As if that weren’t bad enough, his counselors have turned into flesh-eating maniacs overnight and are now chowing down on his fellow miscreants. As in any classic monster flick worth its salted popcorn, plentiful carnage sends survivors rabbiting into the woods while the mindless horde of “infects” shambles, moans, and drools behind. Of course, these kids have seen zombie movies. They generate “Zombie Rules” almost as quickly as cheeky remarks, but attitude alone can’t keep the biters back.
Serving up a cast of irreverent, slightly twisted characters, an unexpected villain, and an ending you won’t see coming, here is a savvy tale that that’s a delight to read—whether you’re a rabid zombie fan or freshly bitten—and an incisive commentary on the evil that lurks within each of us.

Review

Okay so I did something I NEVER do before I write a review.  I went on
Goodreads to see how this book was rated.  Not because I wanted to base my review on that because I don't star here on the blog, only once I reach there anyway.  I did this because I was positive that everyone else would be raving about it like I am.  They weren't.  They were average and all I could thing was WHY!  This book was so much fun and despite some horrible circumstances I was even laughing several times.  Maybe it's because I'm easier to please or the fact that I went into this looking to be amused instead of horrified...  I
don't know the reason, all I know is that if there is a second book I AM IN!

Th story starts with Nick/Nero.   Nero was kind of just your average guy.  Not popular or really anything special and he cares for his sister that has been diagnosed with Aspergers.   Though they really aren't sure what it is.  The medication they need  for her has to be paid for and Dude/Dad just isn't doing anything so Nick works.  Works at the chicken processing plant his Dad got let go from.  When he gets offered a better position with better pay he is all in.  Well until things go wrong he messes up big time and finds himself headed to Juvenal Camp.  Things kind of got worse from there and being a zombie novel you can probably understand why.

Nick/Nero is really quite memorable.  Though he is nothing special his narration and thoughts on everything are  fun.  He's constantly thinking about girls...  Well a girl: Petal.  I mean he's a teenage boy what do you expect?!  He's lucky to get through the day without getting excited and he does point that little fact out.  The thing I liked most about him though was even when everything seemed doomed he thought of others.  Well his family and Petal.  Basically through all the gore, b.s and death he stayed focused.  Maybe a little freaked but still calmer than I ever would be I think.

The supporting cast was interesting to say the least.  Some of you out there may have issues with their names.  Like War Pig, Mr. Bator (took me a couple times but I got it and laughed) but when it comes down to it once again these are teen boys.  Teen boys headed to a Juvenile camp where you get a new name, what do you expect?!  Fluffy names just won't cut it.  Though the guys could be border line vulgar at times I for the most part let it slide because of the circumstances.  Once the girls entered the scene things were a little less intense that way.

There is a unique type of humour throughout this book.  I think it's something you will either enjoy in a twisted way or hate because well it's just too much.  Being of the twisted type of humour myself  I was in the first group.  Like this does include the word tits every here and there but once again TEENAGE GUYS!   The fact that there was a super hot girl Swann in their presence didn't help.  Especially when she goes all back to nature on them.  For completely different reasons I may also have a really hard time looking at chicken the same way ever again.

This book was like a wonderful cross of Zombieland (which I LOVE) and some more serious zombie stories.  The way it came about is like a scary possibility.  You can only mess with what nature gave us so much before it all fights back right.  Mr. Beaudoin basically took everything enjoyable from zombies (the creep factor and the fun) and rolled it into one enjoyable read.  Pick this up if you enjoy  things a bit more twisted.

Quotes
Nick was ready for anything, feeling ridiculously suave in his antibacterial slippers and hairnet, sporting the same Guns N' Roses T-shirt for God knows how many shifts, Axl smelling even worse than he probably did in person.

She was also completely naked."Is not even possible," Yeltsin said.Blood washes over Swann artfully, like body paint."It is just me, or is she still mad hot?"

Finally an ancient raccoon hobbled from the scrub, the very last one.  It stopped, looked at the boys, and sighed as if about to offer a pearl of wisdom. They waited for it, even as Infect hands reached up, just feet away. The raccoon opened its mouth, pulled back its lips. And then lay on its side and died.Pretty good advice, actually.

"Save that frat routine for someone who gives a shit.  If you want to stay in our lodge, you need to learn the rules."
