{TOUR STOP} The Alchemists Academy: Stones to Ashes

Being Kailin Gow's BIGGEST FAN (well one of them) I am ecstatic to be a part
of this tour!! I hope you guys enjoy the review and check this series out!
So promising!!!!

"What do you learn here...at the Academy?" Wirt asks. "Magic? The responsibility to use your powers responsibly?" "Uh...something like that," his roommate Spencer said. "More like how to rule worlds." Wirt, is used to being shuffled from foster home to foster home, adopting a devil-may-care attitude toward the world along the way. Now he s in a school he can't escape, learning to develop his latent magical abilities, for what use, he doesn't know...to save his world or to destroy it...

Review

My love of Kailin Gow books grows stronger!  Seriously guys I am always surprised, even though I know I enjoy her work.  This particular series though on my wish list never got to the purchase list.  Now I am super disappointed it didn't and that I didn't pick at least the e-book up sooner.  From the first chapter this book was filled with action and always had something going on.  That is not an exaggeration by an means.  It was honestly filled with Kailin's quick paced writing that I love.

Wirt (yes that is really his name) has been from home to home for most of his life.  This gives him a slightly low expectation of everyone and everything around him.  When trouble really strikes the unexpected happens, Wirt finds himself transported to another place.  I'm not talking that happy place you go to escape in your head either.  He finds himself in a place where everything he thought impossible is possible.  Not knowing how to get home and Ben those with power around him not knowing how to get him there either he takes what he's handed and goes to school to learn what they offer.  Magic.  Turns put there is more to him than meets the eye.

I seriously enjoyed Wirt.  He was a realistic and easy to connect with character.  Though he mostly looks on the glass half empty side of things, I can't say that I always blame him.  Though the longer he is in this world the more positive he seems to get.  He seems to adapt well but that could be because he is used to be thrown into new situations.  My only qualm is that he seems to accept that he magically appeared in another world and is surrounded by many Wizards and well magic.  This is normally a peev of mine but overall seeing his personality and behaviour was so realistic it was easy to look past the rest.

The other characters were... Likeable.  Spencer his roommate is driven by a father that wants him to always do better than he is and yet the guy doesn't have time for him.  I was however happy that he was kind and accepted Wirt from the get go.  Alana is probably my favourite of the supporting cast.  She was kind yet firm.  Once she had her mind set on something she followed through with it.  Risk and all this girl does whatever it takes.  The other mentionable character is Priscilla.  She doesn't get much face time as she is a Princess and though she is portrayed as flighty she needs more credit than she is given.  Though flighty she is more observant than I first thought.

I honestly finished this one in less than a day.  Its fast pace and forward moving plot left no question in my mind as to why.  Some people may complain that though the story was constantly moving that certain details were left out.  Well this is a part of the fast pace and what keeps me personally going back.  It doesn't work for every book or every author but Kailin Gow rocks it!  I can't wait to move onto the next book and see what happens!

Quotes
Wirt was not sure what was going to hurt more, being hit, or having to listen to someone who had clearly watched too many bad movies and decided that was the way someone tough should talk.

"I'm afraid we have an unstable reaction, class.  Places please."  With that he dove behind a desk with the kind of speed Wirt wouldn't have believed possible for a man his age.

The effects of the forces involved on an amphibian body meant that Wirt spent the whole journey wondering if he was about to become nothing more than a faint greenish stain on one of the walls.

Wirt was starting to feel exhausted.  Running all over the largest tree in the inverse was not exactly easy, even when it had its own transportation system to help.

  1. Glad you liked it, Tiff...though I'm not at all surprised. Another series by Gow? Man, she writes like the devil's on her heels. :)
