PAWN...CAPTIVE...QUEEN?

Kitty Doe is a Blackcoat rebel and a former captive with a deadly connection to the most powerful and dangerous man in the country, Prime Minister Daxton Hart. Forced to masquerade as Daxton's niece, Lila Hart, Kitty has helped the Blackcoats take back the prison known as Elsewhere. But Daxton has no intention of ceding his position of privilege—or letting Kitty expose his own masquerade. Not in these United States, where each person's rank means the difference between luxury and poverty, freedom and fear...and ultimately, between life and death.

To defeat the corrupt government, Kitty must expose Daxton's secret. Securing evidence will put others in jeopardy, including the boy she's loved forever and an ally she barely trusts. For months, Kitty's survival has hinged on playing a part. Now she must discover who she truly wants to be, and whether the new world she and the rebels are striving to create has a place in it for her after all.

But I wasn't a Hart, either, and I was barely a member of the Blackcoats as it was.  I didn't belong down here, but I also didn't belong in the manor.  And that was far scarier than anything Daxton could throw at me   the realization that no matter what rank I'd earned or whose face I wore, I had no idea where I really belonged.
It was up to us now.  All we had to do was find a way to kill the most powerful man in the country, and we would win this war for good.
But while my mind whirled with the desire to kill, my body didn't want to die.  My feet remained frozen to the floor, my hands glued to my sides, and though everything inside me screamed to do something, to stop this before Benjy paid the price I should have   and would have   paid a thousand times over for him, I couldn't move.  I couldn't speak.
For her, death was freedom.  And a pardon from the life she would have had to live if she'd survived.

I have really enjoyed this series.  The Black Coat Rebellion was an interesting and fun trilogy to read, filled with twists and turns in every chapter.  I had really invested myself in this trilogy and had put off reading the finally because I worried it wouldn't hold up to expectations.  Though it was still packed with the creative writing I have come to enjoy from Carter, I found myself let down when turning the last page.

There was so much build up to this book, I was disappointed to find that Queen itself had very little to offer in independence from the previous two novels.  Though there was action and everything I wanted, it was often predictable and offered very little intrigue until about the last quarter or so of the book.  This also may be part of the pacing.  Pacing is something that I personally as a reader rely heavily on, and found myself drifting away more often than I would have liked.  However, when I reached that last stretch I really found myself pushing through and wanting to see the best possible outcome.

I had always somewhat admired Kitty.  She has been a victim since day one, and tries to fight her fate in one way or another.  Along side this, she can be selfless and kind, often putting others before herself.  I think I expected her to really step up in this book, become the strong leader that was obviously begging to be let out.  However, despite a few revelations I was sad she never stepped up to become the girl I had hopes she would become.  She did however have some growth and gained some maturity, showing that she had learned with everything she went through.  Though a really well panned out character from start to finish, I just don't feel like she ever really made that last leap into independence.

The romance and the friendships in this on may be what really drove me over the edge.  I found myself often groaning or wanting to scream.  I have always been able to appreciate and even respect a well done love triangle.  After finishing Queen I'm not even sure what I think.  Was it really a triangle?  Was it ever?  Did I miss something?  This could 100% be a me thing.  I was so sure that there wasn't one but everything changed with this one book.  I think that the possible switch up was done well, but left me stumbling because I just didn't expect it.

I honestly don't know how to say what I want to say about this book and the conclusion to this trilogy.  There has been so many ups and downs, but Carter and her phenomenal way of weaving a tale kept bringing me back for more.  Though I found myself let down with this book, I do not regret this series and have them lined up with pride on a shelf.  I think that my feelings on this book will be an anomaly, and many people will find themselves enjoying it.  Though I felt a little empty after finishing this book, I recommend the trilogy as a whole and will as always purchase anything Aimee Carter puts out.

In a village without sound…

For as long as Fei can remember, no one in her village has been able to hear. Rocky terrain and frequent avalanches make it impossible to leave the village, so Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.

When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink. Many go hungry. Fei and all the people she loves are plunged into crisis, with nothing to look forward to but darkness and starvation.

One girl hears a call to action…

Until one night, Fei is awoken by a searing noise. Sound becomes her weapon.

She sets out to uncover what’s happened to her and to fight the dangers threatening her village. A handsome miner with a revolutionary spirit accompanies Fei on her quest, bringing with him new risks and the possibility of romance. They embark on a majestic journey from the peak of their jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiguo, where a startling truth will change their lives forever…

And unlocks a power that will save her people.

Observing is not the same as experiencing.
I've waited a long time for that, he tells me.  And I should have done it sooner.  This is fate.  You and Me.
No one responds right away.  Mostly they seem to again be processing what I've told them.  Hope rises in me, and I dare to believe that my people are taking heed and will believe me so that we can all find a reasonable course to save ourselves.
As it turns out, I am wrong.

Being such a huge fan of Richelle Mead I was excited for this book.  Not only did it look to be something completely original, but it was a standalone.  To me this screamed addictive with immediate satisfaction, meaning no waiting a year or more to feel complete.  This was accented by the fact that it had a stunningly attractive cover.  What I found between the pages was a beautiful, sometimes complex story that I found myself falling for.

Soundless has a lot going on, this is great at times and frustrating at others.   I'm not sure if this is brought on by the fact that the book is written with such detail because rather than Fei everyone cannot hear, or if it is just feels different because of that.  The best I can say is it was reading a painting.  There is no true voice but it speaks volumes at the same time.  Once I got into the swing of it though there was no stopping me.  It was beautifully paced, and there was a lyrical quality once I really dug in.  Really this is just a mess of words, I know.  It's hard to describe the love and beauty I found in this book while struggling to start.  So many times the words just come, but I find myself unable to adequately put the pacing and setting into a neatly described little box.

When it comes to Fei, I didn't see myself feeling any form of a connection or sense of kinship.  The thing is though, that I did end up feeling that connection to Fei.  I didn't relate to her circumstance, her heritage or anything specific, I just felt drawn to her.  Fei has a fierce determination and sense of duty.  She's a spectacular example of an admirable heroine.  I'm not one to jump down a characters throat for making split decisions sometimes, but Fei wasn't like that at all.  She has honour, a quick mind and believes in her heart that what she is doing is right.  More than likely that is what it comes down to with Fei for me... She has heart.  Fei is unique in her circumstance and unique as a written character.  There is no denying that I can 't adequately describe my feelings on this heroine, but she was awesome to read none the less.

This beautifully crafted world and heroine, had a rather predictable romance.  Now, before you jump that I am ragging on it or being nit picky; despite the predictability it was sweet.   Li and Fei fell for each other when they were younger but a change in station for Fei changed everything for the two of them.  This is what paved the way for them to agree to work together on their impossible task.  Li was both bitter and sweet but not in the way that you would expect.  He was bitter that they lived the way they did and that Fei was now 'above him' and sweet because no matter how hard he tried he couldn't stop caring.  They had this forbidden thing going on, and yet nothing was going on.  There was a spark that rested between them and yet quite often their tradition dictated that it wasn't okay.  They managed but it was obvious from the start that something was building up.

Soundless may not have been what I expected, but by the end it was absolutely wonderful.  Though I will admit that it is the kind of book that you have to be ready to dedicate yourself to.  It isn't overly long, nor is it drawn out.  It is simply thick in its vivid descriptions of everything.  This is a world filled with silence that is brought to fruition with stunning clarity.  It is seeing everything with so much more clarity because you can't hear it, and yet when you can...  Well, that is its own type of wonder.  Though I don't feel this book fits into what many would expect of Mead, I believe that fantasy lovers will have no problem picking up and devouring this book.  Just be prepared to wait until the very end for everything to come to a head!

About the Author

Ann Marie Frohoff grew up in sunny Southern California. As a teen and young adult she spent her time frequenting and living in nearly every beachside city up and down the coast. She settled in Hollywood at 19 working in film and TV. Soon her itch to keep moving took over again, taking her to Hawaii for a time and then back to LA.

She’s now settled in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Her wanderlust and propensity to live life out loud has brought her many life experiences so many of us only dream about. Always the storyteller, it would be of no surprise to those who grew up with Annie, that she made the transition into a book and screenplay author. You could say that she woke up one day and had an epiphany, deciding to go to school for screenwriting. It’s with this inner fire she set out to write her first screenplay. Soon after, such work made it into the hands of an agency creative executive who challenged her to write a novel to support the complex ensemble cast of characters she’d created. Thus, after only a couple of years and many hours on the road immersing herself in her subject matter; her edgy modern day "Walk The Line meets John Hughes Classics” debut novella, SKID OUT, has been completed, along with the first installment in her Trilogy. SKID OUT is the prequel novella to the HEAVY INFLUENCE TRILOGY.

The first installment in her Heavy Influence Trilogy, FIRST KISS, is tentatively set to release late spring 2012 — The series is a story about young, reckless love between a rising rock star and his younger muse, spanning 10 years of their tumultuous and passionate relationship. Each book in the Trilogy will come with a soundtrack of original music, of which the lyrics will appear in the pages of the books. (Alternative Rock Genre).

Annie has now also delved into the supernatural fantasy world with her writing partners Shaun Barger and songwriter/musician Matthew Reich. Taking inspiration directly from song lyrics and building an entire realm of vastly complex characters and plot lines; weaving history, fantasy and heavy doses of romance together. You will be kept turning the pages of “The Zodiac Wars: My Gemini” novellas and “Precious Metal: The Prince and the Gypsy” book series. Both series of books are currently in development.https://www.facebook.com/heavyinfluence/?fref=ts

In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera.

At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known.

Why I'm Waiting

Well... Cover lust.  There is not a doubt in my mind that I will NEED this one the second I can get my hands on it!   Between the beautiful cover (I'm strangely addicted to covers with red), and the fact that A.G. Howard is totally amazing this book is a given for me.  Admittedly I am also extremely interested in the twist/retelling aspect.  I can only think of one other book that ever did Phantom of the Opera and I loved it.  It's not something that is done really and I am super intrigued to see how it all pans out!

SeriesThe Talon Saga #4

Dragon hatchling Ember Hill was never prepared to find love at all--dragons do not suffer human emotions--let alone the love of a human and a former dragonslayer, at that. With ex-soldier Garret dying at her feet after sacrificing his freedom and his life to expose the deepest of betrayals, Ember knows only that nothing she was taught by dragon organization Talon is true. About humans, about rogue dragons, about herself and what she's capable of doing and feeling.

In the face of great loss, Ember vows to stand with rogue dragon Riley against the dragon-slaying Order of St. George and her own twin brother Dante--the heir apparent to all of Talon, and the boy who will soon unleash the greatest threat and terror dragonkind has ever known.

Talon is poised to take over the world, and the abominations they have created will soon take to the skies, darkening the world with the promise of blood and death to those who refuse to yield.

Why I'm Waiting

I have been addicted to this author ever since I picked up the first Iron Fey novel.  Then I had the chance to meet her and I told her how it had brought me to tears...  She told me those tears fuel her writing and I laughed, but now I'm starting to wonder lol.  Any book by Julie is an auto buy for me and then add that this is about dragons... Well, this saga has become a serious addiction.  If you want to know why I'm waiting, it's simply because I'm hooked!
