Whispering Hills by Taryn Browning: Review & Giveaway!

For as long as she can remember, 17-year-old Alexis Forbes can hear the thoughts of others. Most recently, she is disturbed by the dark, unfamiliar voice of a frightening killer: callous, cunning, charismatic…and dead.
She hears his every sinister thought. But she can’t tell anyone. No one would believe her. Alexis is suddenly being haunted by a terrifying past she doesn’t remember, and a ghost with a serious score to settle. Even Chance, the gorgeous new guy she’s falling for, has his own ghostly secret. He’s definitely not like any guy she’s ever met. Alexis soon discovers she has a connection to the dead and it runs much deeper than she could ever imagine. And if the sociopathic entity has his way, she’ll finally be sentenced to the fate she escaped thirteen years ago.

Review

Alexis hears peoples thoughts.  Well not everything that they think so much as the decisions that they are going to make.  So when someone starts thinking of killing and they mean it Alexis can hear hear it loud and clear.  The question is what can she do about it? When you don't know who to trust and no one but your sister knows the truth about what you can do, you can only do so much.  With her gift she is going to give it a try though and when Chance shows up and she can't hear him at all the questions start to build.
I had a bit of a hard time connecting to Alexis but that didn't stop me from liking her.  Living hearing other peoples thoughts in your head can't be easy and you have to give her a lot of credit for not going crazy.  Even just hearing what people are deciding everyday would be super hard.  I think that it's why I am so happy when she doesn't instantly fall head over heels in love with Chance right away.  She notices that she can't hear him and that gives her reason enough to doubt him.  It's refreshing to have a story where the girl doesn't look right past something like that and knows how to doubt.
Alexis doesn't have a lot of friend but she does have Tiffany.  To be honest I can't really consider her a true friend.  She's not trusted with Alexis's secret and as far a s support goes there isn't really any.  I get that she is the basic stereotypical high school cheerleader type but the level of selfish she is really is irritating.  Summer on the other hand is not a friend by choice. Actually she prefers not to even think of herself as a friend.  She speaks her mind every step of the way and is a unique character.
This book was not what I had expected.  I was really surprised when I found out what was going on and was caught off guard a couple of times.  Normally I would pride myself of figuring it all out before the characters do but with this book I was thrown a couple of times and I don't think I got there much faster than Alexis did.  This book was a wonderful surprise for me.  Taryn did an amazing job of balancing out the right level of mystery, romance and the paranormal.  I can't wait for the next book!!
