**Mini Reviews** Snow White Blood Red (Grimm Prequels #1) & Beauty Never Dies (Grimm Prequels #3) by Cameron Jace

What if all you knew about fairy tales was wrong?
Book description of Snow White Blood Red: A Grimm Diaries Prequel as told by the Snow White Queen:
I have always wondered why you never asked about my name. Was I so superficial to you? So stereotypical and mundane? Why did you treat me as if I were just the monster of the week? You know what I think? You never had the time to really hate me. You wanted to hate me, long before you even met me. You wanted to scrape my existence and avenge your childhood princess by laying all blame on me. What if they didn’t call me the Evil Queen, what if I told you the real story from my point of view instead of hers, would you ever think of me as an angel? Could I ever make you care? I know that deep inside of you, you adore me,but you’re just scared, afraid to admit how much you love the Snow White Queen.
This Grimm Diaries Prequels are a number of short books in the form of epistolary diary entries. The diaries are more of teasers for the upcoming series: The Grimm Diaries, allowing you to get a glimpse of what to expect of the series.

There is something fun and original about this novella.  This being the first of the prequels to Snow White Sorrow, I was over the moon about getting my hands on it.  I mean I have only been drooling over that book for months!   I love the description and how the "Evil Queen" seems to not be all you believe her to be.  Yet there is some things that lead you to believe she is every bit as evil as first imagined.  However this is what some of us adore isn't it?

This prequel kind of skims the surface of what you need to know about Snow White.  It also kind of gave me a fae feeling with the need to keep everyone's real name under wraps.   I know this is not the intent but it is once again the power of names right...  Basically the Evil Queen explains the need for hunting Snow White and also that she is not an evil step mother but her mother by birth.  We also get a more basic glimpse into how Snow White is not the innocent that we know her as.

There is actually a lot of things I didn't expect to find in this little prequel that I did.  I love the darker and more twisted way that the Grimms immortals are portrayed.  From what I know of the originals they weren't the sweet
dreams kind of tale to start.  I mean in the original Cinderella her step sisters cut off their toes and heels just to try and fit in the glass slipper!  Not anything you heard as a child right.  I am one to read something and see it for the story that is behind it and this has wonderful potential.  There are some grammar issues here and there but for the most part I found myself so submerged that I didn't notice.

Peter Pan has a plan. Since it's been hundred years since his friends were all cursed by the Brothers Grimm, he is about to wake up Sleeping Beauty, his eternal lover. Oops, you didn't know that. Blame it on the Grimms.  But in the middle of the ceremony, he is visited by the Evil Queen who manipulates him into helping her with information about Snow White. This or she will expose him as he has been secretly kidnapping kids to help him rebuild Neverland in the Dreamworld.  After the deal is made, Peter continues with the ceremony, bringing Sleeping Beauty back into life.  What Sleeping Beauty is capable of and who she really is are like nothing ever written in the books.

If I thought that I enjoyed the Evil Queen, I really enjoyed Peter.  This as started about is told from Peter Pan's point of view.  Though he isn't a Grimm he is involved with one.  His soul mate and eternal love but there is much to do before she wakes and Peter is anxious to get it done so that they can be together.  100 years is far too long to do without her, especially when there is work to be done concerning Neverland.

Peter is kind of a fun voice to read.  After all he is he boy that never wants to grow up.  Though some things make you want to grow up.  The Queen of Sorrow is one o those things for Peter and I loved how he was antsy over it her entire visit.  However the queens only intention is to find the lost 7 before they can help Snow White.  This was amusing due to Peter's circumstance and impatience to get things moving.  This causes the dear queen some irritation as he plays with her while giving her the possible answers she wants.  His hearts just not in it while he is so concerned about his love.

There are also a few more well known characters in this one.  Both the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Dracula are a part of this wonderfully spun tale.  This also shows  progress that Cameron Jace is making as n author.
Both the writing and his ability to bring his characters to life are becoming more vivid.  This instalment will only further entice the reader to pick up the remainder of the prequels to dive further into his world.

  1. First of all, I adore those covers! They are amazing. I have heard of these several times but I wasn't sure what they were all about. Now that I do, I think I might really enjoy them. I don't really read novellas much, but I think I might have to check these out. Thanks for the double reviews!

  2. Actually, I'd never heard of these before, but I really like fairy tale retellings so I should check them out. These sound really cool! I really like the cover of the second one too, they're very haunting, which I like.
