Since her twin brother, Eddie, drowned five years ago, sixteen-year-old Elsie Main has tried to remember what really happened that fateful day on the beach. One minute Eddie was there, and the next he was gone. Seventeen-year-old Tay McKenzie is a cute and mysterious boy that Elsie meets in her favorite boathouse hangout. When Tay introduces Elsie to the world of freediving, she vows to find the answers she seeks at the bottom of the sea.

Another question spins around my mind.  Does Tay know about Eddie?  Would it be so bad if he did know? Yes, I answer myself.  Because if Tay knows about Eddie, then he will see me as only half a person.  I want to be enough for someone just on my own.
"That's the beauty of it," Tay says.
"I don't need to talk about it.  It's just something I do, like breathing."
I grin.  "You mean it's like not breathing."
He smiles slowly at me, like he's just realizing something.  "You're right.  And I'm glad I get to not breathe with you."
I picture my life in the future.  When Dillon has starved himself to death, I'll have let two brothers die.  Dad will be long gone, and that just leaves me with Mum.  Every day will be therapy day.

The Art of Not Breathing was breathtakingly beautiful and tragic.  It' the type of contemporary that you start and lose yourself in.  You can feel the emotions and see the characters, with every chapter both of these elements changing or growing in intensity.  There is a tempo that this book set, bringing depth to the characters and a realistic feel to the entire plot.  For a book that I walked into with no real expectations, I for sure got more than I had anticipated.

What I think I loved so much about this book, was its inability to fall in line with other books of this sort.  I am not saying that I have a thing against the books that are about loss, and yet they find a way to have the life they wanted, and find the love of their life that moves heaven and earth to be with them.  This is what I would call realistic in the sense that everything just kept falling apart.  You don't always have that person you can go to, and even if you do sometimes it feels like you can't.  The was a tragic note throughout the book that pulled at my heart, and when it wasn't tragic it was this sad pretty thing.  There wasn't a lot of complexity to the plot, and yet somehow it managed to easily snare my attention and affection almost right from the start.

Elsie is not the popular girl, or the unremarkable beauty that has no idea how beautiful and extraordinary she is.  Basically I loved Elise because she was ordinary and though she may not have enjoyed being on the outside, that was where she seemed to fit.  There is not a moment throughout this read though that she was not growing.  This is a girl that blames herself for losing her brother, gains weight because she believes she now eats for both her dead brother and herself and sees things the way no one else seems to.  This is her way of coping, of not moving on but merely living.  It is only when she starts to take steps in a direction that should have never been considered, that she starts to move forward and leave her life of living standing still.  There is no one moment that she "changes," but a series of moments and problems that encourage and push her to finally move, finally become more than she felt.  I cannot sign enough praises for this girl and her ordinary life that maybe I couldn't relate to, but I could feel for.

Honestly, though there was a romantic interest it was far from what mattered in this read.  Well, it did matter but in its own way, not in the traditional way.  Elise needed Tay to grow, and realise she was more than the invisible "fat girl."  This wasn't just because he was there, but also because he wasn't.  I enjoyed the realistic nature of their relationship, as well as the complexity of it.  They weren't the couple everyone envied.  Heck, next to no one knew about them.  I want to say so much more but the problem is I really feel that this is a less is more type of situation.  So much about this relationship changed the dynamic throughout the book, so to explain it would be to ruin everything for you.  Just know that nothing was "typical," and it wasn't a love story by a long shot.

Alexander crafted and beautiful, unique and well fleshed out novel.  It didn't lack character and I would have to say that the plot was wonderfully original.  I can't say that it was perfect or that no points were matched to others , but I loved that it felt real.  The Art of Not Breathing is the perfect read for someone that wants a contemporary read, with real feelings and real characters.

Why I'm Waiting

I am beyond in love with this cover.  I picked up Firstlife because I loved the cover and Gena but, by the end I was super conflicted.  Basically, I'm interested in seeing how this book goes and crossing my fingers that certain things happen.  From the synopsis there's a good chance that I'll end up getting sucked in and dying for book #3 before I'm done.

Selection, she didn’t think she would fall in love with any of her thirty-five suitors. She spent the first few weeks of the competition counting down the days until she could send them all home. But as events at the palace force Eadlyn even further into the spotlight, she realizes that she might not be content remaining alone.

Eadlyn still isn’t sure she’ll find the fairytale ending her parents did twenty years ago. But sometimes the heart has a way of surprising you…and soon Eadlyn must make a choice that feels more impossible—and more important—than she ever imagined.

No, this whole process made no sense, but I could see how it happened, how your heart could get swept up in the endeavor.  And that was my hope now: that somehow duty and love would overlap, and I'd find myself happy in the middle of it.
"If I'm going to be Queen one day, I need to win the people over."
"And you think finding a husband is the way to accomplish that?"  Mom asked suspiciously.
"Yes.  It's all about their perception of me.  They think I'm too masculine.  The most absolute way to refute that is to be a bride."
I had felt it growing, this feeling that had been hiding beneath the surface for some time now.  I'd seen him, this person who never intended to be seen, and my faulty, silly, useless heart kept whispering his name.  I clutched my chest, feeling my heart racing.  "You treacherous, treacherous thing.  What have you done?"

This series has been truly something, a series of up and downs.  The only book I didn't read right after the release was The Selection, and that was only to allow some of the hype to die down.  The Crown I just couldn't get my hands on quick enough.  Not for any other reason than this was the end, this was it.  No, I didn't want the series to end but honestly I did just want to know.  Especially after the mixed feelings that The Heir caused to ripple through me page after page.

There is so much that you can't really say with this series without spoiling anything.  With all honesty I wish that there was more to this book.  Please don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it.  I enjoyed the way that it ended, but I wish that the journey to get there was a little more detailed.  Undoubtedly there was a lot that needed to be packed into this final instalment and so many expectations, but I wish that sometimes it had been a little more fleshed out.  There were times that it felt like I knew how it was ending, but wanted to savour it a little bit longer.

The biggest thing for me (beyond the fact I was happy with how everything ended) was that, Eadlyn was truly redeemed.  She was almost a breaking point for me in the previous book and though I started to warm up to her, there was still room for so much to go wrong with her in this book.  However, she truly came into her own and became more than I could have every expected.  Once again because this is the last book I don't want to say too much but despite a few obvious choices, Eadlyn really did become a character that I enjoyed.  She learned through everything and took the steps that she needed to, not only for herself but for the people of her country as well.  She still does have some growing to do but she is for sure on the right path.

When it comes to romance and the men of this book there is really not much to be said.  I think that some of their secrets that came out shocked me but beyond that it was fairly obvious who wasn't going to be in the final three.  This was probably the more predictable part of the book and I was okay with this.  In fact most people that have followed this series probably were.  The thing is Cass put a little twist in there.  Okay, I kind of expected it but still it did initially surprise me that it all wrapped up the way it did.  There was so much at stake for these guys and some made unexpected steps, while others went a way that no one could have expected.  Overall, I really enjoyed how everything turned out for each guy and the true colors that shone so brightly from each towards the end.

The Crown was the end that I had hoped for.  Part of me wishes there was more, that we could see how the decisions that Eadlyn made played out.  This is one dystopia series that I feel complete by, which is no easy task.  It's hard to feel satisfied with the end, when often the end is only the beginning in dystopia novels.  I would have to say that overall Cass nailed it and I hope to be able to pick up more reads by her in the future.  If you haven't started this series, I would highly recommend it if you are a fan of dystopia and stunning covers!!

Here We Go....

At the start of this month I made my return to Escaping One Book @ a Time. I scheduled posts ahead of time and made sure I had a few ducks in a row, because having them all in a row would be a miracle seeing many of them tend to waddle off. While I've just kept to my regular scheduled posts, my safety net, I've been reading all of your suggestions. I have been plotting out the best way in which I can incorporate the suggestions I've been given. I mean they are awesome ideas, I just know I need to pace myself.

SO....  Basically, I love everything you guys said you'd like to see and it was basically what I had hoped I would start to post.  Eventually...  See because I've been out of the loop for so long I have learned this will take time.  Author posts and book hauls will take time to become a regular thing.  However, I LOVED the suggestion of discussions!!! This is something that I was thinking of doing bi-weekly/weekly.  I have always loved reading fun a quirky discussions and this will also be a place where I can discuss stuff like: Books that brought me out my slump, reading recs and other bookish stuff.

I am also trying to ensure that I give you at least 2 reviews per week.  I used to do 4-5 but then I also burnt out then.  I will also do weekly WoW posts and probably one promo.  I don't want to flood you with unoriginal post but I have to ask how would Top Ten Tuesday fare?  What is too much?  What out of those kinds of posts do you want to see?

*****
  In other news....

I have also started a journey into the Bookstgram community about a week after returning here.  Let me tell you guys that place is freaking MAGICAL!!!  I hope you have seen it in one way or another because honestly some of those pictures blow my mind!  This means I went in being TERRIFIED of not being good enough.  Turns out I didn't need to worry.  No, I'm not super cocky and think I'm super awesome, but this is a WONDERFUL, AMAZING and SUPER supportive community.  I mean just because I have less than 300 followers right now, doesn't stop some much larger accounts from commenting and supporting my start.  I know that doesn't sound like much but it means a lot to a little start up like me.  If you're on Instagram check me out <3 I'm little but I'm working on being mighty!!! All you have to do is click HERE and you'll be taken to my account.  Here's a few of my recent photo's:

I think that I may even try and do a weekly post that highlights Bookstagram or maybe even just other accounts that I love.  I don't really know, but I know that I have a desire to bring the Bookstagram world I have become a part of into the blogging world that was my first love.

******

For those of you that are new and the ones that have stayed with me from the start... I cannot thank you enough for being here, for following me and for every single comment/suggestion.  I may do this for me but in the end it's your support that keeps me going.  Knowing that I have people out there, taking time out of their day to check out my blog...  Well, it makes blogging a more fun and exciting experience!!

As always let me know if you have any other suggestions!!! Heck let me know if you think I'm crazy or a suggestion to make my posts more appealing <3  Your guys opinion matters to me and I seriously hope you don't forget that!!   You can look forward to some of the posts you've requested popping up in October!!

Neverland Evermore by Sarah J. Pepper (Review)

Series: Never Ever #1

Neverland has a way of breaking people. It corrupts souls. It destroys hope. The evil festering inside it brings out the darkness in our hearts and leaves us worse than dead. No good has ever come from it. Ever.

It is where I was born.

Therefore, darkness is all I know. Corruption is in my bones. So when I see him, I mean to win his heart and then break him. I mean to lure him to my arms and then destroy him. But it is his intentions and his wicked smile that deter me…at least until a lost soul from my past catches up with us.

My world ignites into flames. My love’s sinks to the depths of the sea. We are from two different worlds that overlap for a brief moment in time. But it is that moment which carries me forward. It is that moment in which he lives in the past. It is that moment in which I embrace my true nature and seek vengeance against those responsible for feeding his hand to that godforsaken crocodile.

Another gunshot went off as I plummeted into the angry water below.  My first mate stumbled away.  The last thing I saw before the waves crashed over me was her eloquent face.  The last thing I heard was my name on her lips.

Her love was the last thing I fely before being pulled down into Davy Jones' Locker.
I jumped at the sound of James' pocket watch as it marked the final hour of another day.  The clicks of the watch became louder with each passing second, a cruel reminder that I lived...and he didn't.

  Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
"Mermaid tears do incredible things, and I've watched children join the stars," she cooed.  Remorse carried in the tone of her voice.  "But I have never heard a man give warning of a place called Neverland, because there is no escaping that hell."
"You don't understand what you are asking, Captain.  Neverland has a way of breaking people.  It corrupts souls.  It destroys hope.  The evil festering inside it brings out the darkness in our hearts and leaves us worse than dead.  Criminals, traitors, and the truly evil beings are attracted to it.  No good has ever come from it, no matter how much treasure is buried on the island."

Twisted tales seem to be really picking up in popularity and I'm loving it.  Plain and simply put I enjoy the chance to pick up so many different takes on tales that I have known and loved.  Peter Pan I'm finding has so much potential to be twisted.  Pepper shows off her talents by not only twisting it but putting Miss Bell and Captain James in the spot light.  Nothing about this read was what I expected, yet everything was better than I could have ever wanted.

Because this is such a quick read, it jumps right into the thick of things.  It then proceeds to be told from Miss Bell in the present day and Captain James from earlier that year.  Though it may sound like it comes out confusing, it is as clear as a bell.  Pepper flawlessly sews the two together and creates a symmetry between the two that made for a smooth read.  Along with this was the many unique twists put in place throughout the book.  Each step forward or glimpse into the past and how the pair discovered what they have and what they have to lose, consumed me.  Their darkness is their light and this fuels so many events.

What I love most, is how Miss Bell and Captain James are crafted.  There is a pull between the two characters that is undeniable, but more importantly they work.  Bell is not the sweet little fairy that we see in the Disney version, nor is she like any version I have read before.  Her role in Neverland, her relationship with Peter and everyone was not expected.  I also loved the unique way Bell's 'green' was twisted into her being, into her character.  This also leads the way into how the ticking on the pocket watch connected her to Captain.  I loved this truly unique twist.  LOVED!  As for the Captain, he had his own remarkable charm and this book is not the end for him.  I want to go into more detail but honestly I think you should discover him all for yourself!

This read was beyond addicting and hinted at so much more to come.  Sarah J. Pepper has easily slipped into my heart, as a must read author when it comes to twisted tales and retellings.  This book was beyond addictive and I seriously am already itching to pick up the next book.  If you're a fan of twisted tales you will not want to miss the chance to pick up this beauty.  It is a perfect example of the inside matching the beauty of the cover.  I cannot adequately voice how amazing this book was, how remarkably unique this book was right from the start.   Basically what I am saying is judge a book by its cover and pick this baby up!!

About the Author

Ann Marie Frohoff grew up in sunny Southern California. As a teen and young adult she spent her time frequenting and living in nearly every beachside city up and down the coast. She settled in Hollywood at 19 working in film and TV. Soon her itch to keep moving took over again, taking her to Hawaii for a time and then back to LA.

She’s now settled in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Her wanderlust and propensity to live life out loud has brought her many life experiences so many of us only dream about. Always the storyteller, it would be of no surprise to those who grew up with Annie, that she made the transition into a book and screenplay author. You could say that she woke up one day and had an epiphany, deciding to go to school for screenwriting. It’s with this inner fire she set out to write her first screenplay. Soon after, such work made it into the hands of an agency creative executive who challenged her to write a novel to support the complex ensemble cast of characters she’d created. Thus, after only a couple of years and many hours on the road immersing herself in her subject matter; her edgy modern day "Walk The Line meets John Hughes Classics” debut novella, SKID OUT, has been completed, along with the first installment in her Trilogy. SKID OUT is the prequel novella to the HEAVY INFLUENCE TRILOGY.

The first installment in her Heavy Influence Trilogy, FIRST KISS, is tentatively set to release late spring 2012 — The series is a story about young, reckless love between a rising rock star and his younger muse, spanning 10 years of their tumultuous and passionate relationship. Each book in the Trilogy will come with a soundtrack of original music, of which the lyrics will appear in the pages of the books. (Alternative Rock Genre).

Annie has now also delved into the supernatural fantasy world with her writing partners Shaun Barger and songwriter/musician Matthew Reich. Taking inspiration directly from song lyrics and building an entire realm of vastly complex characters and plot lines; weaving history, fantasy and heavy doses of romance together. You will be kept turning the pages of “The Zodiac Wars: My Gemini” novellas and “Precious Metal: The Prince and the Gypsy” book series. Both series of books are currently in development.https://www.facebook.com/heavyinfluence/?fref=ts

If I fix You by Abigail Johnson (Review)

When sixteen-year-old Jill Whitaker’s mom walks out—with a sticky note as a goodbye—only Jill knows the real reason she’s gone. But how can she tell her father? Jill can hardly believe the truth herself.

Suddenly, the girl who likes to fix things—cars, relationships, romances, people—is all broken up. Used to be, her best friend, tall, blond and hot flirt Sean Addison, could make her smile in seconds. But not anymore. They don’t even talk.

With nothing making sense, Jill tries to pick up the pieces of her life. But when a new guy moves in next door, intense, seriously cute, but with scars—on the inside and out—that he thinks don’t show, Jill finds herself trying to make things better for Daniel. But over one long, hot Arizona summer, she realizes she can’t fix anyone’s life until she fixes her own. And she knows just where to start . . .

The walk to Sean's Jetta felt like my own green mile.  The idea of being alone with him in a car with barely two feet between us brought my nausea trickling back.
Hate was such an ugly, infectious thing.  It burrowed deep inside and consumed.  My hate hadn't begun that way, not even after Sean.  It had started out as an ice cube lodged in my throat, an obstruction I couldn't move no matter how many times I swallowed.  Then it melted, and the cold had trickled through my insides, numbing me.
It wasn't fair what he was doing to me.  Making me realize things that I really didn't want to.  Making me realize things that I really didn't want to.  He was so messed up.  His parents had done that to him and neither one cared that they'd damaged something so fragile.

OMG!! Turning the last page page of this read I knew that I was going to have a book hang over.  Two days later and I am still struggling with what I will be picking up next, because I worry that it will suffer in the wake of this read.  This book leaves no real place for me to start and end, but there is undoubtedly words twisting and pushing to come out.  If You Fix Me is a heart ripping, stunningly beautiful read bound to call to many different readers.

The plot and pacing flowed together in perfect harmony.  It was like Mozart and Picasso had a baby and it was Johnson's writing.  I know, I know that was a little weird...okay a lot weird, but honestly my love for everything within these pages knows no bounds, weird or not.   Reading this was quite possibly as easy as breathing, yet somehow felt like I was watching a heart wrenching movie.  Everything just flowed so flawlessly that there was no need to come up for air, it just never called for it.  Even as everything began to fall apart, it was pulling itself back together.  Each character had their own story, their own voice and yet twisting them together worked perfectly, making everything imperfectly perfect.

Jill is everything I want in a character.  There was absolutely nothing perfect about her,  but at the same time everything about her character was flawless.  It's hard with contemporary novels for me because I'm either going to find I connect with the character and really love them, or just like them because they are written well.  As the synopsis says Jill likes to fix things but what made me love her was the reality that sometimes you can't fix others until you fix yourself.  She was not lost, but she wasn't good at voicing things...awkward to say the least.  Jill is someone that people can relate to.  Her emotions, thoughts and feelings are very easy to understand.  I have no doubt that even when I was a teen these are some things I would have experienced in her shoes.  Basically what I am trying to say is that Jill was as close to perfect as a character can get.

Daniel and Sean are nothing alike and yet they seem to have something that is the same.  For me I didn't really want one more than the other, there was a pull from both.  I think for Jill it was the same way, but only more complicated.  Sean was who her heart had wanted for years, only to be betrayed.  Daniel had something in common with her, a past and a broken home.  There were also many boundaries with Daniel, and it's so hard to explain without ruining it all, just the same as I can't explain Sean without taking something away.  However, the entire thing with Sean always felt like it was a little sideways, like there was a missing puzzle piece that no one was willing to see even though it was just sitting in the box still.  Both boys were expertly written and brought a unique element to Jill's life.

This book is nothing short of a must read.  It's heart breaking, heart mending beauty, rolled into one beautiful book.  I cannot even tell you all of the ways that this book was amazing.  I will make sure that everything that this author writes finds a home on my shelves.  With its lyrical writing, developed characters and beautiful story, If I Fix You is by far one of my favorite reads this year.  If you are a fan of contemporary or are looking for the perfect hangover read, this book is undoubtedly the one for you.
